Widescreen laptops impressions needed

Post by the FooL »

I'm currently in the market for a laptop.

So far, I'm thinking of plopping down the 2K for a Sony VAIO
PCG-GRT100 series (GRT10014... cause I don't want to pay an extra $100 for XP Pro).
16' UXGA screen 1600x1200
P 4-M 2.0G
64MB nVidia Geforce FX 5600 Go

Second runner up is the Dell 5150
P 4-M 3G
15' UXGA screen
64MB ATI Radeon 9000
I think I can get it for around $1500 or less, depending on rebates, etc.

Now I also thought about the Dell 8500, since it has the nVidia Geforce4 420 Go
but it only comes in Widescreen.

I was told that games that didn't support the native res would look funny.
Now I doubt those laptops can play a decent game at anything higher than 1024x768
without toning down the eye candy.

So... can anyone with a widescreen laptop tell me what res you play games in and if it's odd looking?
I can live with the 16' sony screen, just that I can get the Dell 8500 several hundred bucks cheaper by choosing the cheaper options.
Sony locks me to certain options.

Toshiba and Dells may be the only companies that provides decent driver support for their widescreen laptops. That is very important since NVidia will not have drivers supporting their mobile chipsets. My VPR Matrix runs great but so far after over 1/2 yr, not a single drivers update.
