Worth the Hassle?

I found a couple of old IBM SCSI drives.. I believe them to be 1GB drives.. They really wouldn't serve me any good at that size.. Unless I throw them in my server tower and use them in a raid config as the "OS" drive? Or would that still be a waste? I couldn't find enough info about them.. Model# is 93x2476 and the only reason I'm even thinking they're 1GB drives is because they have a sticker on both the scsi connecter and the pcb that says Data "10024641" Though that could mean nothing.. Dunno.. Anybody else? They're selling on some website for $178 a piece.. lol.. eGo

I don't know why anybody would pay those rediculous prices on this stuff.. I guess I'll just go ahead and $h1tcan it unless somebody wants it.. lol.. eGo

Like Greg said, old SCSI drives aren't worth it when you're looking for that magic SCSI performance. I recently retired two of my SCSI HDDs which were 5 years old (and been used 24/7 all that time) and replaced them with a new 120GB IDE drive. The faster of the old drives, a Cheetah 9LP, has a STR of 12-19MB/s ... my new WD1200JB offers 29-49MB/s.

I doubt it's a 1GB drive ... my guess it's a 9GB SCSI but I would have to see it. One of the oldest IBM SCSI drives I remember, the Ultrastar 2XP (4.5GB 7200) goes for ~ $30 ... and those are even slower than my retired Cheetah 9LP.

i dumped all my scsi drive . 1 1/2 years ago when one of my hard drives took a dump !
it was a 9 gig drive . and only found 1 drive of the same model and brand avail on-line and they wanted $1800 to replace it. to top that off i know the manufacture that made that drive went out of business. like 4 years ago .
and my other drive i had in my unit was a atlas 10 gig and dont remember how i got rid of it !
but im pretty sure i couldnt fine a buyer ~local or online !
now all i have left in my main machine is the promise controler card .and my plextor ultraplex 32x reader & plextor 8x burner . ya its time to upgrade them but trying to find a buyer wont be easy. and i hate to just trash them !

ya i need to upgrade them to a new writer !

the only reason i was scsi before was a main one and no real choice i ran out of irq's
was running at the time 2 hard drives , the plextor setup (burner & reader ) the promise controller card ,sony slot load dvd player ,magic dvd video reader card , a normal video card , sound card , and i think i had not 100% sure a scanner contoller card in the unit ,plus a zip tape drive !
that was my reason for scsi !
lack of irq's

when i replaced the drive i bought a 45 gig ibm IDE unit -7200 for like $175 and now i just bought a western digital 120 gig 7200 rpm special edition for $106 out the door ,
sure beats what scsi costs even the cables for scsi cost a couple of dollors more then IDE ! if you dont have to hunt for a supplyer that has them !!!

I didn't know they made drives that big back in 1990?? Biggest I'd heard of for use at the time was like 2GB (though that was IDE).. I guess I'm just gonna scrap them. Thanx Guys.. eGo

You didn't say it's from 1990 ...

I bought a P200 in 1996 and it had a 1.2GB IDE and that was considered midsize.
1990 was the year when Intel introduced the 80386SL and HDD size would've been ~ 200MB ...

I said it was "old"! lol.. I guess I did leave out that little bit of "Need to know Info" lol.. It would not surprise me at all to be that size.. I've got some ANCIENT stuff here.. lol.. I'm gonna try to fleabay some of it as I've seen it got for upwards of $50 and that would make it worth my while. lol.. eGo

IBM's site doesn't have any info on it. I did a Google Groups search and it appears to be a 400MB SCSI HD.

I have a couple 300MB SCSIs pulled from a Intel DX2 "rig" that was like 12 years old+ !!! Atleast I am pretty sure they were SCSIs, can't remember. If they were, they were just MASSIVE drives with the massive ribbons. It ran Windows 95 too.
