Ideally you want the Wireless AP located as centrally as possible in the house. Also you want to place it as high as possible - on top of a bookcase or in the attic.
I used to have problems when the AP was in the living room (where the router is located). When I moved it to the kitchen and put it on top of a china cabinet.
The boosters reputedly do work. If you buy one from a local retailer you can always return it in 30 days if it doesn't work out, so it's worth a try.

I was using the linksys and booster up until Yesterday when I tossed it for a dlink all in one. and honstly, the dlink is about 50 feet to the left of where the linksys and booster was and about 3 feet lower and I have the exact same coverage.
But the booster did help a bit, but not as much as I hoped. What it really does is shrink the packet loss and things like that.
