I have a client with 2 computers (Win98SE) networked peer-to-peer. The laserjet printer is connected to computer #1 and shared on the network, and computer #2 has that printer setup as a default network printer.
Once in a while (like once a month) #2 losses the printer. When this happens the printer icon vanishes from the Printer window (the only thing you see is the Add Printer icon).
The computer has not lost connectivity - you can still see the network, you can browse shared folders on the other computer and you can see the printer on the other computer via network neighborhood.
If you try to add the printer, Windows says that it can install the drivers but the printer is currently unavailable on the network.
If you reboot computer #2, the printer is back and it works fine.
This happened again just the other day. Computer was working fine, printed several pages. Then tried to print some more stuff and the printer was gone.
Any ideas? Never seen anything liek this before. Only one mention on the newsgroups and he hasn't solved it yet either.
Network printer icon disappears on Win98 system - anyone seen this before?
