i use a powered hub - that way there is no drain on the computer and you get a cleaner signal - you cn just sit it on the shelf on hook up whatever - they're pretty cheap, though you might want to get one that is usb 2.0 compatible for the future

my set up

usb1 mouse
usb2 hub

hub printers 1,2, usb zip, scanner when needed, cflash reader, etc

makes it easier to plug unplug stuff you don't use that often like zips, flash readers, etc.

i upgraded my pc with a usb 2.0 upgrade kit from belkin...got the pci card (with 2 usb ports), usb cable, and 4 port hub for $45 shipped (they had a 50% off sale a few weeks ago). works very nice and is extremely convenient to have the hub on my desktop. oh, the hub is powered also. :)

Ditto. get a powered hub unless you have bandwidth issues. No sense in tying up a 2nd IRQ with another card unless you need USB 2.0 and your current ports aren't 2.0
