Got a WD HDD issue...

I'm running a re-badged 40GB 7200rpm WD HDD as my system disk. I'm watching a DVD on the computer, minding my own buisness, when the damn thing starts clicking, and then the system bombs. Haven't been able to get it back up yet(on my parent's pc while XP installs on my 120gb hdd). Is this a common problem,and will I be able to copy the files from my old HD to the new one? thanks.

i had one bomb on me - it was about 3 yrs+ old - i was able to put it in as a slave in another system, chkdsk full and retrieve most of the data - it was out of warranty so i haven't fooled with it

Clicks or clunks is the death knell of a hard drive. You suffered a disk crash I'm afraid.

You MIGHT be able to get it to run long enough to copy some data off if you install it as the secondary drive on another system.

I had a IBM 16.8 gb doing that but only if I did something heavy like playing a game, running prime95 or decoding. I put it as slave as John mentioned and was able to copy over files ok. So you might be able to do that, though I agree the hd is toast.

So far I've been able to copy almost the entire drive. For some reason it says the drive has 6.4 gigs on it, but the directoy i copied everything to only has 4. I'm sort of pissed, but its all good. Crappy store I ordered the drive from wants a copy of the original invoice that it shipped with, which was over 4 months ago. I got the hookup from my friend, got a new 40GB Seagate ultra ata 100 on the way overnight for $89. (not oem, too!). Anyway, I'm hoping I can copy everything to the new HD and start up windows like it never left. I REALLY don't want to reconfigure XP and re-install all my programs/drivers.

Well you can always RMA it from the manufacturer if the store doesn't replace it.
