Why wont this f'ing modem install!!!
I bought this box from Predator for a lady to give as a christmas gift to her son and i got windows and everything installed just fine but i cant get the damn modem to work. I bought some PCtel modem at CC got it installed and when i run the diagnostics the computer cant communicate with the modem. I thought maybe it was bad so i went to WM and got a USR v.92pci winmodem and i'll be damn if i dont get the same freakin error. WHen it installs it always puts 2 of them in the list. I click properties and it says the modem info is corrupt. Please remove it and reinstall it. I cant see it in the device manager and in the modems under control panel. I've tried changing pci slots and that doesn't even work. The box is running an abit BH6 mobo. All i have in it right now is the VC in the agp slot and the modem. It doesn't show an irq conflict. WTH is going on here!!!!!!!

Windows has ALWAYS had problems with modems.
You need to keep in mind that if it's a software modem (winmodem) then you have to uninstall the software for it as well as the driver.
Go to the Add/Remove Programs wizard in Control Panel and uninstall any modem drivers or applications.
Then put the modem in a different PCI slot and start again.
Make sure to read the instructions. Most of these PCI modems have different procedures for different flavors of Windows. Sometimes you have to install the software driver first BEFORE installing the card.
Also keep in mind that 1 time out of 20 Windows will "lose" the modem on boot. It's an old problem that MS never solved. So if you can't communicate with the modem using the diagnostics in the Modem section of Control Panel, try rebooting first and see if that fixes it.

I've tried all that FP and i still get the same thing. Windows wonderful help suggested installing standard modems drivers from the modem install screen and it does that fine but when i try to run the diagnostics i get "couldnt open port". I've never had this much trouble trying to install a modem, make that 2 different modems. HOw is that i get the same error on 2 different ones?

Blade, before going any farther I'd recommend backing up the registry. That way if you screw up something from here on, you can get back to this point.
I like to use Microsoft's Emergency Recovery Utility:
http://soldcentralfl.com/quakecoop/files/eru.zip
This is only for Win95, 98 and ME (although you can also use System Restore in ME).
I make one of these before doing any work on a client's Win9x system.

I've had ENDLESS problems with modems over the years on client systems. Windows is retarded when it comes to modems (even XP).
The only modems that never give me a lick of trouble are USB modems.

I finally got it but dont ask me how.
For some reason it kept installing in twice which didnt help any at all. Once i was able to run the diagnostics and see those pretty little commands i sat back and drank a beer, shot the ole a box a bird and smiled. Nothing like a good challenge to start the day

I guess I'm lucky?
I haven't ever had a problem installing an PCI modem in any of my computers. The only problem I'm currently having (which really isn't a problem as it gets the net through my network) is getting my PCMCIA modem to work in W98.. Lappy recognizes it and says it's there, but it says the device is busy when I try to dial up. Like I said, no biggy though. Glad you got it fixed.. eGo
