Weird, what the hell?

Turned on my computer today and my dvd rom drive and my burner aren't working and are not listed in My COMPUTER. Went to device manager and they are there with an !. Havent installed anything recently or removed anything! Tried uninstalling them, when i reboot they are identified but problems with installation! O and my USB controller has an ! as well. Any ideas anyone?

Did a mc affe online scan and no viruses found either!

But try it.. IF the doors won't open and shut already anywho.. It worked for me.. Shut your computer down. Before you turn it on press and hold the eject button on either CD-Rom, don't let go until it opens.. Then it should fix the problem.. If they already open and shut no problem, this prolly won't help.. eGo

have you tried going in your bios and trying to autodetect the drives again?


As for the usb controller, make sure you have your driver disk that came with your mobo. Uninstall the usb controller. Restart and let windows auto detect it. Load the drivers off your mobo cd and it should be fixed

My chipset is SIS, board is P4S4A/DX+

Can't use either drive for loading disks. They open, close, and spin but dont recognize anythings there.

I haven't even opened my case to mess with connections, so its nothin mechanical I've done!

unplug the IDE cable and reseat it...just to make sure. also, i've had problems like this before if the power supply is crapping out...it loses enough juice to correctly power everything and drives start coming and going randomly when i would reboot.

Did you just recently install CloneCD perhaps? I had a similar problem and it's a problem with a registry key.

What OS are you using - if it's WinXP then try this tip - it's from Viahardware's forums - but it works for other chipsets as well - I've had to use this tip on Via motherboards and SIS motherboards as well to switch UDMA on and a couple of times just to get my drives back... If you don't have a Via chipset, then just skip to Open Regedit.... If nothing else works, maybe this will...

I have your DVD, and have it set for UDMA4. Ensure that u have all your drives well set up in bios for UDMA, and in Device manger that u have "Use Udma if available". Have 4in1 4.38 installed, to ensure u haven't mixed the optical drives with the HD. After all this, let's do a small registry editing: Open RegEdit Find the following KEY

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x

The last four digits will be 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, and so on. Under each key, delete all occurences of the following values: MasterIdDataChecksum SlaveIdDataChecksum. Reboot the computer. Windows will now redetect dma settings. There is one key for the primary master, another for slave, another for secondary master, and another for slave. U only need to delete the key for the one u wish windows to redetect.

It's quite likely the IDE cable jiggled loose. Same issue with my best friend's computer last month. Same issue I had last week with my SCSI drive.

Simply just did a reinstall of Windows XP, problem solved.
