Too many fans, not enough connectors!!!

Post by TheBattousai »

Well, I have a little problem here. I ordered a case off of SVCompucycle that is able to hold 6 fans, and I just received all of them (4X NMB Ultra Quiet Fan and 2X Enermax Whisper Fan). The one thing I noticed when I opened my package was "Hey, how am I going to power all of these???". Only the two Enermax fans came with Molex converters, all the others only have the plugs that will go straight into the motherboard.

So, to put it bluntly, what the #$@* can I do??? Is there a way to buy or make some Molex converters to hook up these extra 4 fans with? Another question I had was about baybuses. I don't really need to control the speed of my fans (no OCing or anything), but would one allow me to hook up these remaining 4 with little hassle to myself? I'd be willing to shell out some more money if it would get the job done. If anyone knows where I can find any of this stuff for a good price, please tell!!!

Thanks for your help in advance. :)

(edit) On a side note, I am planning on putting some cathodes into my case. Is there something that could handle both the fans and the cathodes?

I found this. It seems a little expensive though? I also found this. Which is MUCH cheaper and seems to be reasonable. It will probably be cheaper than a baybus as well, but the baybus will achieve what you're looking for. Hope this helped. eGo

Many fans come with a 3 to 4 pin adapter cable. Those 3 to 4 pin cables is what you need. See here:

Just get a few of those and hook them together, no need to waste moola on a baybus. ;) You can hook a cathode to them also, np.

Thanks alot guys, nice to see people are rushing to answer my questions. :D

If I did hook up a cathode to one of those connectors, wouldn't it just turn on when the comp did? Would this be a strain on the cathode at all? I know marscheese has a front panel with switches on it to turn on and off his cathodes/chaser lights. I was wondering if you could get something like that which would also work with the fans.

That will turn the cathode on/off with the computer. Unless you have the switch outside the computer. But how many of us actually drill a hole for it? :D The cathode doesn't use that much power so having another fan or 2 attached on the same cable is ok. unless it's something powerful like a vantec tornado.

I have mine connected to a baybus so I let it control when the light is on or off. Mine is a 6 port baybus but if you go that route you just need one with under 4. I have seen them, just look around at the sites we linked to. I'm sure some have close to what you'd want.
