Cooling issues/ questions.

Post by James »

I want to upgrade the cooling in my computer, and need to know a few things:
First, i cant find the papers that tell the exact specifications of my computer components (like the sizes of certain things etc.), so is there a way i can find that out without the papers?
Also, as far as heatsinks go, which one is the correct one for my cpu? It's a 900 mhz AMD, (sorry i dont know more, hence my first question), i got it back when 1.4 gigs just came out and was the fastest there was, if that helps.
And finally, to add something i just noticed while looking in my comp. The fan on my nvidia geforce2 is not running, and is incredibly hot. This has got me really worried, because i play counter-strike (among other games) almost religiously. A while ago, large grey lines appeared on my screen. I determined it was a graphics card problem, but because i didnt see any decrease in frame rate or performance (and was broke), i didnt make much out of it, and simply got used to the lines. Now because im getting into case modding im just realizing it could be a heat issue. Could the broken fan be the cause of it? If so, or even if not, what would be the best replacement cooler?

Thanks guys, and sorry for the lengthy post but bear with me and pelase answer all my questions. :)

First things first, replace that fan on your video card!!!!!!! ASAP! You will end up frying it. After that there are many cooling options but I must pose the first question. Are you planning to overclock? If the answer is yes, then by all means look for a better cooling solution. If the answer is no, then I say don't fix it if it ain't broke.

what video card do you have... if its not top of the line hella fast... get a crystal orb for it.

ok

first things first, i suggest you read up a bit on the technology by reading the forums. Just surf the pages here in the general hardware section

Second, as far as a heatsink for your processor, you would have many options. but you first need to find out if its a socket or a slot. I think cause its a 700mhz amd, it could possibly be a athlon. Which in that cause would most likely be a slot. but check it out first.

next, replace that fan on your vid card immediatly. If the grey lines dont clear up, then you most likely need a new vid card soon cause that ones goin
Gone for good. But never say never
