maxtor advice
I currently use a Maxtor 40GB Hdd (GL040J2). I think I'd like to add a 2nd Hdd and wonder if anyone has used the "quiet" Maxtor (D740X-GL) and found it to be especially quiet.
These are the instructions that came with my Thermalright SLK-800 cooler:
Assembly:
The assembly gestalltet itself just as simply as with the standard Slk-800. after the foil of the base plate was removed and the processor core with thermal compound moistened, leaves one the 6-Punkt-Halteklammer in the base noses to engage. Subsequently, the radiator box is aligned centrically on the base. By means of slotted bolt turners finally the catch side of the fixing clip down pressed to these on the base engages. A strammer contact pressure develops, whereby a good waermeaufnahme is ensured. Although the additionally existing PU Schaumpads provides for a safe seat on the processor, the PC should very carefully be transported and/or the radiators before transport be developed.

I'm using one now and I can't say I ever hear it. And the fans I have aren't that loud.

I have two 40gig D740x drives (non-fluid bearing drives) in RAID-0 now and I never hear them and I wouldn't say my case is loud either. I have three 80mm fans total and the top of my case is cut open. I'll tell ya whats loud--that damn Pioneer slot-loader!

I have a 60 gig Maxtor DiamondMax® D740X . 7200rpm Model number: 6L060J3
Bought this drive OEM at Tcwo. Drive only.
Kinda noisey but not too bad. I can hear it spin up, Sounds like some of those High speed CD drives,
but then I don't hear it untill it's reading/writeing
I need to defrag it probably. I hear it clickey clacking as it reads and writes. Not reall loud, but you hear it pretty easy.
I think it said it was suppossed to be nearly silent, it ain't that for sure!
I've had the drive about 3 months or more, I'm happy with it. I plan to buy another Monday, either the 60 or 80 gig. Under $100 counting shipping! I was going to order it Friday, but got busy and forgot!
Don't recall when the last defrag was, so it might be fraged a good bit causing the drive to work harder and thus making more moise than normal too.
I plan to drefrag the drive, (if the system is ever Idle long enough), then if it still makes noise I'll call Maxtor and ask about it. Make sure I didn't get a bad one or something, works great cept for a little noise. I also do not have a drive cooler on it, and probably should!
I haven't had any trouble with this drive, Just a little more noise than I thought it should have. I think it has more noise than the 8 gig Maxtor for sure!
