Ram upgrade with win95

Post by Jellyfish »

Hiya ppl Im new here so be nice!!
It looks like a good place to get some good tips and tricks...so here goes.

I have just upgraded my friends RAM on her PC from 32 to 128 megs SDRAM. It all went well but on start up and in the Perfomance Window (device manager) it still says its got 32 megs....either its not working properly or Win 95 hasnt picked up on its extra RAM. The PC itself works fine.
Is this normal with Win 95 or do I have to do something to get it to recognise the extra RAM or has it recognised it but its just not displaying it....I aint had much to do with Win 95 so excuse me if I sound a little stoopid.
I have an intermediate understanding of PC's and operating systems but the more I learn the more I realise how little I know.
Am currently studdying A+.

thanks for any information any of ya's can give me.

On older boards anything above 32MB on one module is probably too much. Low density RAMs are typical in the 16 and 32MB variety. These are what that board can take. If that board has either a TX or VX chipset, more RAM won't be of much use anyway.

Agreed. Older systems can't use modern SDRam.

Your best bet is to go to Crucial.com and order the ram for your specific motherboard. They have an online database.

<i>"all went well but on start up and in the Perfomance Window (device manager) it still says its got 32 megs"</i>

So BIOS didn't even recognize it? Do you happen to know the model of your motherboard? If so you can look at the manufacterers website and see what the max it can support. Good luck.

Yeah I pushed it all the way in as its got clips that snap shut once its in there... I did try the other slot but it wouldnt go in no matter how much I tried and seeing as its not my PC I was reluctant to really give it shit, so's I just put it back in the slot that it fits in. Some one told me that installing Win 98 was prolly a good idea as it would probably pick it up upon installation of a new operating system. Im not really convinced tho although the idea does have some merrit and I am sposed to do that next weekend anyway. I even went back to the shop and took the motherboard book thingy to show the techie down there and said the RAM is of the correct type for the mother board and thought maybe it was a faulty chip so he gave me a new one but it got the same result. Its not being able to find the solution to simple proceedure like this that make me think Im a forklift driver for a good reason. haha

thanks heaps for all your guys help...if any other ideas spring to mind please lemme know. You guys rock!!!

The operating system has NOTHING to do with it. It's a hardware issue.

If the ram isn't detected by BIOS, upgrading to 98 is not going to make any difference.
