Go DVD.
If you don't have a favorite place to buy, I have been very happy with tcwo.com. they seem to have the best prices on most stuff I have wanted (and bought) so far. They have a trouble shooting area online and other usefull stuff, like how to install a cpu heatsink. Also most important they have info or links to info on what your buying to check the specks most the time. I also got free Life Savers with the hardware! Shipping up to 150 pounds (I think) is only $7
I bought a Lite ON DVD drive, am happy with it. Supposed to do everything any CD-drive does, extract music, reads all the formats I know of. Not much over the cost of a cheap cd-drive and got DVD.
I'd never buy other plain Cd-drive not much differnce in price and shipping cost the same mail order.
As far as connecting drives, I keep cd/dvd on one cable and Hardrives on the primary. Never cause a problem, but my recorder is an 8x.
One problem I do have that is wierd. I bought the kid a brandnew game, installed it on my computer and it works great, tried to install it on hers and keep getting a drive not ready error like the disk isn't in the drive. Never installed it, could never find the disk in the drive! Put in another cd and it shows right up.
This is the factory disk too. I normally make a backup copy of everything to use, but not yet on this one.
We played Warcraft all night over our network, disk in her drive never had an error, used a homemade copy backup too. Wierd!
