If you want to build your computer, start smaller and upgrade. Like, get just 256mb PC2100 first and then add another stick of it later when you have the money. Plus, I would suggest you get a hard drive that is atleast 7200 RPM. The hard drive compared to all other memory is slower than mollasis. It would be best to get the fastest you can afford, really.

You probably also don't need a 400w PSU. a 350 should do fine. I'm running a 300w with my setup (Athlon 1600+, 256mb PC2400, AIW Radeon, SbLive 5.1, Pioneer 16/40, hp 9300i, etc.) My suggestion is check out newegg's refurb section. http://www.newegg.com They have good prices an all their stuff. Just bought two 40gig D740x (maxtor, 7200RPM) which will go in RAID-0 for $162 shipped. One was $82 and i got the other for $69 cause it was a refurb.

I think you are going to have to either lower your wish list, or buy some of that stuff used.. Just don't see you being able to buy all that new for $800

i agree dadx2mj i will have to get some used shit, but whats the harm right? used parts are just as relyable as new ones, in my opinion anyway.

what you guys think if i got a KT266A mobo?

I see what you're saying and you didn't insult me in anyway. But somethin' you gotta realize is prices drop all the time so you shouldn't really think about that too much. Unless you're gonna spand this project over, say, several months where there would be a significant price drop. I bought all my computer parts for my system within a month so there was no real price drop in any of the items I bought.

My board has the AMD761 chipset and it's rockstable. My friends EPoX 8KHA+ has the KT266A chipset and his is just as stable. Never heard any complaints from him thus far. He's running an Athlon 1600, 64meg VIVO, 256mb PC2100, SBLive 5.1, etc.

Unfortunatly Ive got 400 bux right now and my 'putting-together' will take serveral months to get the money to buy the rest of the parts. I figure im gonna have to use some old parts of my current box (CD-ROM and HDD). I've decided to get a KT266A MOBO no matter what the cost, i cant deal with a unstable computer and everyone is saying good things about the KT266A. I've also decided to just get 256MB of DDR for now and get a stick of 512 later. if anyone's got a Stick 256MB of PC2100 DDR for $40 or so, Im interested.

some times newegg.com actually has great deals on mobo's in their refurb section.. a while back, newegg even had refurb Epox 8KHA+ for about $60.

as for the ram... i doubt anyone will sell any DDR to you for only $40... you're basically offering about only 1/2 the market value
