@#*# comp
Lastnight I shut down my Slot A 700@950 Classic so I could use the keyboard, mouse and monitor on a comp I'm building. Today, I sent the built comp home with it's owner and I reconnected everything to the Slot A comp. Now it won't boot.
I've tried reseating everything too. hard drives spin up , fans all run but no signal to the monitor. I had the thing sold too. I'm thinking the Athlon slipped into a coma after I pulled the plug the other night. That thing has been a solid rock for me too. Maybe I will try to revive it later on tonight. If not, may it rest in peace. . . ummmm . . . or is that "may it be sold in pieces".

Does it usually run 24/7? If so, it's not uncommon for a prolonged shutdown to cause a problem.
Parts can creep out of their sockets due to contraction and expansion from temperature changes.
Could be there's been a loose CPU or memory stick in there all this time, and shutting it down for a day made it creep up out of the socket a millimeter and break the tenous connection.
Reseat the CPU, memory and video card.
Also try pulling the power supply cable from the mobo and reconnecting it. I've seen a funny thing happen with power supplies that are failing. They'll fail to fire up the mobo unless you pull the power connector which forces a capacitor to discharge and then allows the system to start.
Hope this helps...

You and i have had shitty luck with comps these last couple of weeks... I'd do everything FP suggests and maybe try a different PSU before i gave it the sledge hammer treatment... So far i've managed to kill a 1700+ XP and a 40 Gig GXP60. Not sure what happend with the XP and the 40 gigger gave out when i pushedthe FSB too high.. And i thought IBM's were suppose to be able to handlethe higher FSB speed... Geezz...

I cleared the cmos, tied again, gave up and unplugged it. About an hour later , I pulled the AGP card and put it back in , pulled the Slot A and put it back in. Booted up with a "checksum error" , so I reset all the bios settings, shut it down and put back the second stick of 128megPC133. Hit the power and . . . .back to square one. I think I'll rip everything out of the tower and put it all back in piece by piece. It's been a faithful comp for me in the past. The last six months I used it for 24/7 folding and a web server.
Specs:
300w Antec PS
Epox 7KXA with latest bios and onboard audio disabled
Slot A Classic 700 hard modded to 950
2x128megPC133
Voodoo3 2000 AGP with added 40mm fan
Ensoniq 64 PCI sound card
Netgear 311 nic
Buslink 52x cd-rom (sticker says Lite-On, box said Buslink)
Generic 1.44 floppy
WD 10gig ATA66 5400rpm drive
WIn2K Server with SP2
Norton NAV 2002
Norton Internet Security 2002
No other software installed because it runs as a webserver 24/7.

Question for ya Nascar: Did what happened after you inserted the second stick of memory strike a question in your brain at all? (Not meant in a bad way, more of a helpful hint) Try all 3 different mem slots with only 1 stick and see if u can get it to boot (the one it booted but with checksum errors) and then add the second and try the other slots and see if you can't get it working.

The two sticks have always been in it. I pulled one out to see if it made a difference. The checksum error was from me clearing the cmos. I still don't know what's going on with it. I did get it booted up and it is up and running now but I don't want to shut it off yet. I will shut it off tomorrow and see if it restarts or not. It seems to restart if I pull the processor out and reseat. It's possible that the old Slot A might need a little more juice running to it. I think I have the voltage at 1.85 or 1.90. Again, the processor is hard modded. I changed the multiplier, cache divider and the voltage on the processor itself by moving the tiny resistors around. I did run it at 1000MHz for about 6 months then I cut it back to 950MHz due to problems when Norton Anti Virus would cause it to shut down.
