Need some advise on Dual Monitors in Win2K

Post by FlyingPenguin »

I have a spare PCI card (old Matrox Millenium - no 3D capability at all), and my main card is a GF3 Ti-200. Using the latest Det driver under Windows 2K (and no, I do not want to upgrade to WinXP even if it handles MultiMon better).

I know some of you are running MultiMon under 2K and want some opinions. What potential pitfalls am I going to run into?

My secondary monitor is going to be a 15" for now (I'll buy a 17" later) and no way I'll be able to run it over 1024x768 on the 15" (main card is at 1280 x 1024). Is that going to be a problem? Thought I'd heard once that Win2K required both cards at the same resolution.

I just want a larger desktop when working on web site design (I usually have Photoshop, ImageReady , IE and GoLive running at the same time and bouncing back and forth between them.

Am I going to have any problems with 3D games? All I play are 1st person shooters - mostly OpenGL.

I've seen a 3rd party MultiMon utility mentioned here. What's it do that's not built into Win2K?

Thanks!

Ive had nothing but good luck with dual monitors on Win2k.
Initially my workstation ran an ATI Rage AGP card and a voodoo3 PCI card, no problems. Then I upgraded to a matrox millenium dualhead 550, which was real nice.

The both monitors at the same resolution depends on the card, with one ATI and one 3dfx I had each one at a seperate setting, without any problems. The Matrox Dualhead is a tad diffrent, by default it acts as one video card with a max of 2048x768 res (1024x768 *2) but there wa sa driver download that allows you to set it up as 2 diffrent displays.

I've player Quake, UT, and a few other games on this setup and never had a problem, just but the 3d-enabled card in the AGP slot as most games will default to running on that monitor.

Have fun, once you go dualhead youll never go back!

ran it for a week just fine, till the different colour tones on the 2 monitors started pissing me off and so i sold the 17" KDS

i didnt have any problems with different resolutions on 2 separate cards. That issue under Win2k was strictly a problem when only one video card is used to power two monitors. With 2 separate cards it is possible to run two separate resolutions. When you play games, Ultramon or Multimon just shuts off the secondary monitor.

As for what it does that Win2k doesnt do...I think it allows you to stretch the taskbar all the way across two screens, give the option of using 2 different wallpapers, and you can drag ICQ onto the 2nd monitor, though once you do, it cant be resized.

Those are the 3 main things that I remember...I didnt run into any problems at all really...just had to set the main card to PCI in the bios, but I think that's only for ATi PCI cards

I was using a Radeon AIW and a Rage 3dII 4mb

Oh man, this is TOO cool!

Hehe, I can run Photoshop on my main monitor and have moved all the photoshop sub-windows (history, layers, etc) to the 2nd monitor and radically increased my workspace AND now I can see more of my layers (I use a LOT of layers).

VERY COOL! :cool :

Dual Monitors rocks. FP - I do the exact same thing you do, run photoshop in windows with the tools in the other window. I also like to run PS in one window with notepad/ColdFusion Studios in the other. It's a great way to develop for websites and makes working more efficent.

Quick Question though. Has anyone done dual monitor setup in Win2k/WinXP with a Radeon 8500?? I just purchased a nice 8500 card and i know it has the hydrovibe tech. that allows it to do dual monitors. But i also heard it doesnt work that great in Win2k/WinXP? Whats the truth in this? What are the problems? I'd like to run only one video card for both my monitors. Someone with experience let me know!
