CD-ROM Problem...Weird

Post by Executioner »

Hi guys,
Well, I can't for the life of me figure this one out. I've tried just about every thing that I can think of with no luck.

I have a Plextor SCSI Ultra Plex 32x CD ROM reader. For some weird reason that I can't quite figure out yet, it will not show the files on the disk, any disk be it audio or data. Just a complete blank in Explorer. If I insert an audio CD, nothing, no auto start either, even though those options are enabled using TweakUI, and I've looked manually in the registry. ASPI checks out OK with no problems detected, using the latest version.

I thought the CD ROM drive might be defective, but I was actually able to play my audio disk by using EAC or CDEX. These programs are audio rippers. If I click on play while in any of these 2 programs, the audio cd will play.

WinAmp does not see the audio files. WTF??? What makes is worst is when I insert a plan old disk with data. Nothing is visable.
I have no clue to what is going on here.
System:
Win98
256 megs of ram
40 gig IBM hard drive
SCSI Plextor 32x reader (~ 3 years old)
SCSI Plextor 12/4/32 burner

Do you think the drive is defective?

Is the drive set to be "not visible" in the "My computer" options in Tweak UI?

Nope. It's shown there with a check mark next to the drive.

I booted with a floppy that contained my SCSI drivers for my Plextor, and just like I thought, the drive is OK. It's able to read both a data and audio CD from DOS.

So now this is a Windows98 problem, and I really have no idea where to start or where to look in the registry. It sucks, as I might have to re-install Win98, either fresh or on top of it's self. Any ideas are welome!

Upgrade to 2000? :)

Actually have you tried uninstalling the device and then restarting and reinstalling it?

Yeah I tried that. I even assigned it a different drive letter when it booted and was re-detected by Windows. Same results. I would love to move to Win2k, but I have a home network, where all the PC's are running Win98, and more importantly, I need to share my modem with my wife's pc for her business. I'm using Sygage for this, and I don't think the version that I have is compatable with Win2k.
