No sound, Registry problem???

Post by wolflb2 »

Somehow I have lost sound. I installed new drivers, moved every card in the case into new slots, reupdated the drivers and reinstalled, still nothing. No sound at windows start nor at AOL logon (I never htought I would miss "Welcome - You've got mail") . I received advise that the amplifier in teh sound card was probably blown so bought a new sound card. Only slots open were ISA so I now have an AWE 64 Soundblaster card. Still nothing. I don't know what to do next. Could this be a registry problem????

Oh the speakers still work when connected to portable CD player, and are plugged into the PC and are on with volume cranked. :)

Any help will be appreciated.

click on either the speaker icon in the systray or go to control panel to sound settings and be sure wave isn't muted. Sometimes that does get checked when it isn't suppose to.

Need more info:

- Open Device Manager in Control panel and find your sound card driver(s) listed under the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" section.

Is the driver installed?

Is there a red X or a yellow exclamation mark next to it?

- Do you have a mixer icon in your taskbar (as Blade mentions above)? Make sure that the master, wave and Midi channels are NOT muted.

- Do you have ANY sound or are just your desktop sounds turned off (can you still listed to an MP3 for instance)? If it's just the sound effects that are turned off you can enable them by clicking on the "Sounds" icon in the Windows Control Panel.
