AMD 64 3500 939 pin combo a good choice?

I've been hoping that the FX 55 would become more affordable by now but NO :( SO having the urg to upgrade my currently outdated 1.4 ghz t-birds speed, how's the 64 3500 939 pin as a choice? Being 939 pin, I could just swap in cpus IF the FX 55 becomes affordable.

How's this combo via pricewatch or is another mobo preferred? :

Microstar K8T Neo2-F VIA K8T800 Pro/VT8237 Chipset Socekt 939 AMD K8 Athlon 64 FX DDR400 PC3200 1AGP8x 5PCI Audio LAN ATX with cpu - AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ with cpu heatsink & fan Combo Kit
$364 (mobo and cpu only)

OK, nevermind then as I found plenty of info on this setup elsewhere. It'll rock and it's on its way with a new larger HDD, new ram and a 500W PS.

Good choices....definitely good choices man. But have you thought of the Socket 754 A64?
The 754 3000+ and maybe a cheapie board like the DFI UT or the Chaintech. Sure you don't
get Dual Channel....or future upgrade capability, but you can really max these little buggers
and get very good performance. Cost of these two would be much cheaper.

To me, it's affordable enough and it won't be outdated too soon. It also easily OCs to 2.6ghz, the stock speed of the FX 55
Here's an interesting article on it:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/di ... -90nm.html

Here's the OC'ing part of that:

Even w/o OCing, it outperforms any Intel cpu.

all depends on what you want in terms of cutting edge - i have a 754/3200 on the dfi board which will run at 2.5 ghz - not quite as fast as what you'r proposing, but cheaper and i can still use the same memory and agp card

the difference between the single channel and the dual channel isn't that much, but if the 939 is the smaller dies, ot will procbably oc higher - these A64 chips are a lot faster than the bartons already and it's getting to the point where the extra mhz are really only important in benches

Well, I wanted a 64 bit cpu and opted for one that's more "affordable" than AMDs current best. As for specs, that's the basis anyone would use to justify a decision on "which one?" and the 3500+ does pretty damn good from what I've seen via google search on the topic. When upgrading, why not get the best that one can afford now vs going cheap? Anyway, it'll be here soon as I've already ordered it.

just upgraded from an epox 8rda+ with xp 2500 running at 3200 speeds to an MSI Neo 2 with amd 64 3500+ but running it at 11 x 228 right now with retail cooler and everything else from the old box and it was a pretty easy upgrade

all in all its a nice upgrade considering I dont need to change ram, psu or vid cards at this time and the mb is very fully featured

I'm getting to the point of trying to upgrade up higher than I used to so I dont have to reinstall everything once a year so I think this upgrade is pretty reasonable considering the next one will require a new vid card, ram and maybe a psu

I now have the same mobo and cpu as yours. After a few problems, everything's A-OK. Havent tryed to OC it yet but I will once I've got everything else done, all those little details.
