Hey guys, prolly don't remember me from way back. Chotto is a good friend of mine. I was trying to figure ut how to OC an eMachine. Well, to no avail, i gave up and decided to build one this week. This is what me and Chotto decided on, so I got it, and the problem I am having that I hope you can help me with.

AMD 2600 Athlon XP Barton
Thermalright SLK-947-U heatsink w/ panaflow fan/ ceramique paste
Abit NF7-S mb
Geil PC3500 (1 gig)
WD 120GB 7200 SATA hd
NEC DVD +/-RW
Sappphire's Radeon 9800 vid card
Antec's Sonata case

I got it all put together finally, took me 5 hours. The heatsink is a pain in the but w/o intructions, I went online to get the how-to (thanks PCAbuser). I powered her up and all is fine, except it isn't recognizing my SATA hd. I have a SATA driver floppy, but I have to have the OS installed before i can install the drivers. Lastnight I could get into the BIOS, however, i didn't think to look to see if the SATA was ENABLED, it is suppose to be by default. Today, it doesn't make it to the BIOS. I'm about to use the jumper to clear the bios and see if i can get back in. You guys have any advice here for my first build?

Anything would be appreciated.

Nice setup. I believe you mean the barton 2500.


I have yet to use sata but I'd try what you said, reset the cmos and that should let you back in the bios, hopefully. Unplug the power cord first.

Nope, it's 2600....

Bartons are only 2500, 2800, 3000 and 3200. The barton 2500 is a good overclocker, not sure on the 2600.

I did see where they list theBarton's as you listed above, but this is how Newegg is advertising this 2600.

My buddy here is right... it is a Barton 2600+, I specced the system out myself on NewEgg. Retail Barton 2600+

My mistake. )* I didn't think there were any barton 2600's made. Must be new.

Still though, how does it overclock. The 2500 does very well. Hopefully the 2600 does to. That is if you intend to o/c.

Anyway, how's the problem coming?

Disconnect the SATA drive and any IDE hard drive. Boot up and try to get into the bios. If you succeed, "enable" SATA" and set your boot sequence. If you have a bootable CD, make it first then SCSI/RAID (mine uses this setting for the SATA drive). Exit the Bios and shut off the comp, reconnect the drives and try to boot up to a bootable Windows CD. If you are installing Win2K or WinXP, you have to hit "F6" to install the SATA drivers. The Windows install will tell you when it needs the floppy. Sure hope this helps.

Thanks Nascar, but me and Chotto figured it out. However, you are absolutely correct, I had to make me a floppy with the sata drivers, and I was putting in in at the wrong time. I'm up and runnig with XP installed. It's late so it will have to wait till tomorrow to load all teh goodies.

What monitering programs are you guys using/suggest. This is my first serious build and I wanna do it right from teh jumpstart.
