Barton
Barton
I am currently using a 2000+ Palamino with 1GB PC 2700 RAM and MSI KT4V mobo. I don't game or OC. Would I see an appreciable difference upgrading to a Barton 2500+?
These are the instructions that came with my Thermalright SLK-800 cooler:
Assembly:
The assembly gestalltet itself just as simply as with the standard Slk-800. after the foil of the base plate was removed and the processor core with thermal compound moistened, leaves one the 6-Punkt-Halteklammer in the base noses to engage. Subsequently, the radiator box is aligned centrically on the base. By means of slotted bolt turners finally the catch side of the fixing clip down pressed to these on the base engages. A strammer contact pressure develops, whereby a good waermeaufnahme is ensured. Although the additionally existing PU Schaumpads provides for a safe seat on the processor, the PC should very carefully be transported and/or the radiators before transport be developed.

I just upgraded from a 2100 Palomino to a 2400 Thourougbred (most my mobo can take) and to be honest there's no *real* difference. Sure it runs cooler and I get a few more 3DMark scores but in normal everyday stuff there's no discernable difference. You'll only notice a slight difference in gaming or if your looking to squeeze every last drop of MHz out of it, which as you stated you ain't.
In saying that if you want the ability to say 'I've got a Barton' then hell yeah, go for it!!
Cheers!

Waiting for.....
I'm holding out for the Athlon 64. I picked up an Antec PlusView 1000AMG case that will become my summer project, but I won't put together another system until that 64 bit chip is out and reasonably priced. I may even have to sell a few of my machines to come up with the cash necessary to support the new CPU, mainboard, and RAM.
The Barton is a good CPU though. If I hadn't just picked up the Athlon XP 2100+ Thoroughbred 'B' CPU for less than $100, (easliy overclocked beyond 2 GHz), then I would have purchased a Barton CPU, perhaps the Athlon XP 2500+ version. Either way, I think you'll want an Nforce2 mainboard.
