Oh Geez. I Just Baught A Brand New OEM Amd duron 1GHz. So, I Put It In. NOTHING. Black Screen. The same thing happens when i take the processor out. I think i scratched the cpu a bit with the fan while installing it. So, is my cpu dead, or am i doing somthing wrong. PLEASE DONT TELL ME ITS DEAD.

First trying clearing the cmos then be sure any jumpers are set right. But you still should have something happen though. You did apply thermal compound between the cpu and heatsink?

Is this a new system build or just a new cpu?

I Get Nothing. Cant Do Anything In The CMOS. I Dont Have Thermal Compound. Could it possibly Be the scratches on the top of the cpu (They are very light and not in deep)

No thermal compound between the heatsink and processor ? It might be fried. Any way to test the processor in a friends comp ?

Don't forget to check that everything is seated correctly, and reseat everything just in case. Check the memory, CPU, and video card.

But with no thermal compound it probably burned out in seconds and the scratches didn't help. It booted then it sounds like it burnt out. If you have none even the cheapo radio shack stuff works fine. Best is arctic silver II, III and alumina.

Don't throw it away though, wait till you are positive it's toast. If you can't test it on another mobo or don't have another cpu then do you know anyone who can test it for you?

Come on, you think just by booting up That Little (Didnt Even Get To The Bios). These things couldnt possibly get that hot just by being turned on. Im gonna go test it though.

An AMD processor can fry in a matter of seconds if not properally cooled. Been there, done that with a 1.33GHz Tbird.The only thing you need to boot up a comp is, Motherboard, processor with HSF, ram and video card. That is all you need to get to the bios. Try removing everything except those items and see iff it will get to the bios.

Yup 2 seconds is enough to fry an AMD Athlon/Duron with a HSF that is not properly installed... Been there done that and have a cool keychain now

ditto. I took about about 2 seconds to waste a 1.2 t-bird last year. Had a real nice scorch mark on the bottom too.

hdd dont spin up? flip the cable backwards hdd cable makes some comps not boot. i have one like that. also check your hdd jumpers. but you most likely fryed it without thermal compound.

The guys are right about frying the CPU in a few seconds, but that's only if you have no heatsink on it. If you put a heatsink on, and forget to connect the high-speed fan, then it will take much longer to ramp up and overheat. In that situation, it might take a few minutes. Just because you didn't use thermal compound, it doesn't mean you had no thermal transfer; you just have a less than ideal thermal transfer. If you installed the heatsink / fan properly, and didn't use thermal compound, you would not fry your CPU - but it would probably run hotter than desired, and be difficult to overclock.

You stated that the CPU high-speed fan comes on, and so does the fan for the videocard. That suggests that you probably installed the CPU properly (although you didn't use thermal compound), and perhaps we have a problem with the motherboard - such as:

(1) Double-check the jumper settings against the manual.

(2) Is you CPU high-speed fan plugged into the proper power plug on the motherboard? Some motherboards have an option to shut down the system if it doesn't detect a CPU high-speed fan running.

(3) Re-insert the videocard and the memory sticks. Did you place at least one memory stick in slot #1?

(4) IDE cables have a red stripe along pin #1. Usually (greater than 95% of the time), pin #1 is closest to the power connector on the IDE device (such as a hard drive, a CD-ROM, etc.). So check the IDE cable for the red stripe, and make sure it's closest to your hard drive power connector.

(5) Reference #4 above, the easiest cable to flip over is the floppy drive cable. The floppy drives let you plug that cable in either way, because they don't make use of the key in the connector. Again, the red strip near the power plug rule applies.

(6) Don't get upset about the possible loss. You are learning something here.....the hard way. We've all been there!
