AMD locking multipliers

Post by VidmanII »

In my web travels I came across this........

c/p
EDIT: November 9, 2003: Official AMD Forums moderator: "...this is business and AMD can't afford to keep shelling out unlocked 2500+s while losing $300 on each chip."

EDIT: Singapore first to report a 2600+ Barton lock, no word yet on locked 2800+ and up Bartons.

EDIT: Breaking news: AQZFA week 42, UMPW is being reported as unlocked in Australia. There were conflicting reports of other same stepping and week 2500+s being locked and unlocked but now the entire CPU markings AQZFA 0342 UMPW match for both locked and unlocked 2500+ Bartons.

If this is true, game's over as far us trying to figure out steppings & codes for locked Bartons, AMD locked whatever they got their hands on that happened to be in stock.

Majority of the locks were done to post week 39 CPUs. Some appear to have shipped out before they were locked. These are conflicting reports and as more come in, we'll see if they're true or not.

They are no longer making Thoroughbreds so the only Athlon XPs being manufactured are Bartons and Thortons (Thortons are Bartons with 1/2 the cache, they're 2000+, 2200+, 2400+ see table here: http://www.c627627.com/AMD/AthlonXP/) So there's a good chance all lower rated Athlon XPs week 43 and later are locked and many of the week 39 through 42 are as well.

Also see the CODES thread for info on how to tell a Thorton from a Thoroughbred:

Original Posting:

For those of you that haven't heard, new Bartons are factory locked, (not even wire tricks work with them.)

We have yet to see visible physical difference in locked chips which not one person has noticed thus far despite posting pics of L1 bridges, etc.

We're starting a data base of locked & unlocked chips:

locked:
AQXCA 0340
AQXEA 0341 MPMW

AQXFA 0339
AQXFA 0340 MPMW

AQYFA 0340
AQYFA 0341 TPMW
AQYFA 0342
AQYFA 0343 RPMW

AQZEA 0341 RPMW
AQZFA 0339 UPMW
AQZFA 0341 SPMW
AQZFA 0341 XPMW
AQZFA 0342 TPMW
AQZFA 0342 UPMW (multiple confirmations of both locked and unlocked chips)

unlocked:
AQZEA 0334
AQZEA 0339 UPMW
AQZFA 0340 UPMW
AQXFA 0340 TPMW
AQXFA 0340 MPMW
AQZFA 0340 SPMW
AQZFA 0342 UPMW (multiple confirmations of both locked and unlocked chips)
AQZFA 0342 TPMW

You see there is no stepping or week pattern, the only way to increase your chances is to try to get a pre week 39 Barton...

Note that you may have to save & exit a second time in BIOS to get Abit NF7 to accept the new multiplier if you have an unlocked CPU.

hmmmm. The Vidman doesn't see this as a big deal for the Barton 2500+'s anyway as you can still jack up the FSB to say 200-220 if you have a good OCing mobo and some PC3200 or better RAM.

Now if you're thinking of buying the 2800+'s it could be a big problem as they default to like 12.5 multi or thereabouts.

Bottom line = If you're going to OC a newer stepping AMD you better search around and see what you can find out about whether or not a particular multi is going to work for you.

Cheers,

Todd

Yikes!

I wonder if the Epox and Asus boards can get around this as they change the multi internally? Or is it the same thing as the wire trick? I'll have to get my barton quick to avoid this junk.. lol.. eGo

Nope, the nforce2 free ride is over. The chips will default to the factory multi. You're gonna have to get lucky to get unlocked one at this point. I just got an OEM Barton 2500+ AQZFA week 43 UMPW (from newegg's Edison, NJ warehouse ) today for a system build I'm doing. I won't know till MON whether it's locked or not as I'm still waiting on some of the components to come in.

I'll post back w/ results once I get it fired up. I'm betting it's locked at 11x tho. :( AS long as it does 11*200 tho it won't be a problem for me. :cool :

I'd still take a shot on locked 2500+. What's wrong with 11*211 ( 2.33 GHz ) or 11*218 (2.4 GHz). That ain't exactly slow.

But I'm not ready to dish out the extra dough for PC3500-PC4000 memory yet.. lol.. I'm still trying to justify the cost of PC3200.. ;) eGo
