Athlon XP 1800 with Winfast 250 LE Overheat

Post by Kahn_The_Rma »

I bought a computer for my friend. The system consist of :
Athlon XP 1800, 256 DDR PC2100, WINFAST A250 LE, ASUS A7V266 MOBO,300W Pow. sup., Cooler master HHC-001

The system looked well working at the first sight. I overclocked the WF A250 to half of the recommended limits. The system worked well. But late at night my friend called me and said his computer starts beeping after playing a 3d game 15 minutes. I thought it was just because of bios tempature alarm limits. The next day I went to my friends house and set the alarm limits to upper. The system continued to beep. My computer at home has nearly identical spesifications to my friends comp. so I decided to try it once more on my computer.

My computer consists of :
ATHLON XP 1800, 256DDR PC2700, EPOX 8K3A+ KT333, 300W P.S., G-force 2 MX 400, cooler master fan

It never beeped before. But after starting to use WF A250, the system started beeping and my power supply burned to ashes... It wasn't overclocked. The system has its default clock settings. After buying a new power supply I noticed my system overheats forabout 15 minutes. This was no prob with G-force 2 MX 400.

Are all g-force 4 Ti models cause the system to overheat in 15 minutes? Is my friends card faulty? Or do we need a better cooler?

We bought athlon XP processor because of its low price/performance ratio. But when I looked for a new fan in the net, the price reaches nearly a pentium IV. And also in my country, Coolermaster HHC-001 (46$), CP5-6J11C (15$) can only be found.

But as I see, if the problem is because of low quality fan, the solution will be SK-800 with a Delta 80 fan (54$ in USA).

Will we need a new fan? And is this normal for G-force 4 Ti cards to overload cpu? Are there any advises you can give me?

I'll set my cpu ratio to 8 and decrease voltage levels 'cause if this is the case we can't find it in our city (or may be it didn't come to our country). Could it help us to overcome the overheating?

I really think you need a bigger power supply, personally I think 350W will do with 3.3+ and 5+ combined load of 180W min. (check this before buying PSU)

I have 1600+ rock solid with ti4200.

I lowered the fsb to 100 mhz and everything works really fine (although perfomance lowered). CPU heat is stable at 48 C, while running 3dmark 2001 it reaches 55 C. And this card is really a wonder. Although I now use a 1150 mhz palamino :) I can play games at 1024*768 32bit with 6x AA with the maximal details turned on. The problem temporarily solved. But I wanna ask a question... What are the tempature limits for athlon 1800 XP. Not the maximals... The normals. I couldn't find them on AMD official site... I wanna know that because I will set my FSB speed so the cpu tempature may never reach the maximal tempature.

let's see if I can give you some help here.
My xp1800 can run pretty well @1750
but thats with an abit at-7 board ,downhill with the wind. the temps were about 40.C to at one point 48.C using watercooling during the summer. I hadIt up to 1864 one day but I lost it loading
XP pro so who knows. I keep it at about 1700 flat using a low multi and bumping the fsb up.also I use a 5:3:1 or there abouts for the agp ratio and try to keep the card running clean as I'm only a 300w
p/s myself. I ran X-Tream DDR - 2x256
but it dosen't work too well in here so I run a single stick of 2100 512 with no problem.A bigger p/s can only help as will some serious cooling. Some people might suggest 1800's don't o/c too good and that might be the reality.Sure is fun playing though.I think there is a +V mod that can be done on my board and I guess I t wouldn't hurt to check that out also.the way I see it - If you smoke the chip back the next one down a little...

Ok,

My idle temperatures hover around 40 ~ 42 C
My load temperatures hover around 45 ~ 52 C

The highest temperature Palamino can withstand 90 C . But I think anything that goes over 60 C is a Red Alert.

If you've bumped down your FSB to 100 Mhz, RMA your Mobo, I had a MSI K7T 266Pro, which did the same thing. Used to hang in a split second on WinXP on 133FSB. I RMAed the board, and they sent me a new one. This one works fine upto 150 Mhz
