My friend is SO ready to buy a laptop.
I've hooked him up with established traders on anandtech twice, and both times after a deal was closed, they've jerked him around/lied to him. we've been scoping out ebay and getting an idea of pricing/specs.

for 900-975, it should go something like this:
14" TFT or XGA
DVD anyspeed
366 or faster proc
4GB or larger HDD
128mb is good, 64mb is OK
flawless condition, especially the screen
battery life >= 2.5 hours
it must play fullscreen DVD flawlessly.
OS installed, prefer win98se
nic is a plus
no issues
and after we close a deal, the laptop must not suddenly be required to be shipped back to IBM because circuitry got fried, and the laptop must not suddenly be "oh crap" stolen.

There was a thread on a Fujitsu refurbed one for like 830 on AT's Hot Deals...it's comparable to the Walmart one, and I thin you are suppose to get $100 off? Maybe it's already included, but you might want to check it out.
