I contacted Mr. Nave by e-mail on November 1, 2000, regarding a Western Digital HD he had posted. He responded on November 3, 2000, that it was available. I responded the same day with an offer of $115 for the drive. He responded the same day by accepting the offer and giving me his address and phone number. This was a Friday afternoon.

On Monday, November 6, 2000, I sent him a money order for $115. On November 9, delivery confirmation showed that the money order had been delivered. I e-mailed him about the drive again. I had not heard from him since the 3rd.

I finally heard from him on November 9. He claimed that his Outlook had gone down and that he would send the drive out on Friday, November 10. I waited another week and on Friday, November 17, 2000, sent him another e-mail that no drive had arrived. I received no response.

On Sunday, November 20, 2000, I called Mr. Nave. I got his wife who hung up on me. Then, I called back and got Mr. Nave. He told me that his wife had shipped the drive with no means to track or confirm its delivery. I told him that the drive had not arrived. He promised to send me a refund the next day. He said that someone else had complained about not getting something he shipped them.

On November 27, 2000, I sent him another e-mail telling him that if I didn't hear from him or get a refund then I would post this on Wednesday, November 29, 2000. Here it is.

Beware of this guy. He had no problems keeping in contact when he was selling, but as soon as he had the money, he became real hard to get ahold of. He's located in Kansas City.

I'm very sorry to hear about this. Which forum did this all take place at? I couldn't find any of those names here.

What made you send first, did he have good references?

Bad Trader

Post by rstokc »

It was at Anandtech. I couldn't find anyone here with a drive available, so I went over to Anandtech. I didn't intend to ship first, we were supposed to be cross-shipping. I'm so used to dealing with the guys around here, that I got complacent. Between the old AGN, Anandtech, Game TradingZone, etc. I have probably completed a hundred deals or more and never had one go bad. I guess there is a first time for everything. I needed a drive as soon as possible, so I made the deal. I ended up having to buy a replacement drive from DecoyX and got it promptly. Ended up costing me a little more, though.

This should be a warning to the rest of you. No matter how many deals you have go right, it only takes one stupid troll to screw things up.

I know this is after the fact and all but for you and everyone else, even if all has always gone well for you don't let your guard down. For any who don't have good refs let them send first or no deal, period! What seems like a good deal at the time can turn out to be bad. And if you get any bad vibes at all then ask them to send first, or no deal. Many times those bad vibes are a big warning sign.

New peeps have to earn respect and a good name. Even then if someone seems even a little questionable email the ones he has traded with. Many times when one has good refs there are still things the other may have left out to try and avoid hard feelings. It has happened before. So don't just rely on heatware.

And I really hate these lamers who communicate so well when making a deal but then right afterwards they are so hard to get a hold of. Uh huh. :mad

And then there are the others who dissappear for weeks and then show up with a sad sad excuse. Maybe with some the excuse is true but I know with most it's just a lame excuse because they were either broke or had bad intentions. Main thing, Be honest. Be honest or you not be at all!

And remember..

Stay on this guys ass too. Don't let him think for one second that he's gonna get away with it. If you got his phone number I would keep calling. Oh yeah email him the links to these threads. Let him know that others are watching his actions. Maybe that'll change his mind.

Mr. Nave called me and explained that he had been having personal issues that were keeping him away from home. He was deeply apologetic. He admitted that he had not handled himself well, but that he had simply gotten overwhelmed in his personal life. He sent me a money order for the amount owed, plus a little extra, which I received by priority mail yesterday.
