Specs on stock cars...
where can I find information on stock cars, as in, their HP, 0-60 times, etc. My friend and I are having continuing discussion about how he thinks his '92 Grand AM (don't know if it's a sports model or not--it is a 2-door) is better than my '82 Supra.
All his opinion is based on is because at it's current state (not for long though) my car looks like complete and utter shit (that is the bad side) I guess people just don't realize that there is beautiy and performace under those 4 different colors of paint Now I'm not sayin' its the best thing on the road, but it definitly can beat a damn Grand Am! I mean look:
My Car
Inline6 with DOHC, headers, racin' struts (don't know the make cause I'm not a car buff--but the guy at the frame/suspension shop said they were practically the best), 5-speed, 4-wheel disc, positrack (sp?), EFI, etc.
compared to his
V4 (what he told me anyway though it's proably an Inline cause V's are rare), automatic, front disc-rear drum (all I know about it just by lookin' at it)
But until I can get on the road to show him (don't have my license yet ), I'm gonna just have to stick to "facts" We aren't really fighting, but I could tell by the tone of his voice, that he thinks his car can out-perform a car that was originally used for SCCA racing (sports cars club of america)
So does anybody know where I could find information on stock cars, specifically this one? I've used google and askjeeves and haven't had any luck, thus far. THanks

The guy at your suspension shop doens't know shSt and your friend is smoking crack. Positraction is a GM trademark. A Toyota couldn't possible have it. And GM never made a V4. The only company that ever put out a V4 was Isuzu and it went into a Lotus. This was well before GM bought a stake in Isuzu. By the time GM had a stake in Isuzu, Isuzu had already stopped making cars. They're now strictly a truck company using mostly GM parts.

Trust me, maybe its not called positrack on a toyota, but both wheels are spinnin', not just the one. The car is like a mini-'vette cause it has independent suspension and a lot of low-end torque, only a lot less top end speed and over all HP. It handels great. I didn't really know what it could all do 'till my dad took it out on the road and started cutti'n the corners like you wouldn't believe and then commin' outta them, with just a little chip at the tires....it has some get up and go.
I'm still curious on the whole V4 bit cause people keep tellin' me its an Inline4 or a 6cyl car but I've seen at a couple websites and they labeled the Grand Am havin' a V4....maybe it was a typo. I'm still lookin' into it. I'm going to see that friend today and I'll tell him to pop the hood cause this is startin' to tick me off

No, its not limited slip, it's positrack. Both wheels spin all the time--not just one other pickin' up if one stops. I still haven't been able to find out much more than if his engine is a 4cyl, then it's the 2.3l one, not hte 3.3 V6 in the sports model.

the 2.3 is a inline 4 i had one it was in a 86 buick sommerset that is long gone ! but i did buy it new and drove it into the ground ! it is a strong motor for a 4 cyinder and the the v4 stands for 4 valve per cylinder ! 2 intake and 2 exhaust !

Limited slip = positrack
I believe the positrack name was actually made by GM, not sure though.
trust me, his car is definetely a inline 4 or 6.
No way in hell could GM ever figure out a V4

you are correct--I looked under the hood and it's an inline-4 with DOHC. BTW, I was always under the impression, limited slip was not positrack. Rather, it was when one wheel stopped, the other would pick up, not where both spin *all* the time.Originally posted by Viperoni

i think those grand am engines were also referred to as "quad 4's" but yea, renovation nailed it when he said 4 valves per cylinder. fact is that you probably have the weight advantage on him, but somehow i never figured the supra for having the torque and bottem end grunt, i've always thought of it as being more of an up top high HP car. Reg says if your Supra is a stick, and he's an auto, you will hand him his ass!" , and if you are cautious, race from a roll, would be in your favour if what i think is true!

Yep, you nailed the name right About the torque... my car, atleast (though as I said it's not stock) is definitly all torque and--it has no real top end speed. you burry the needle at 85 and it probably can't go much faster than 100-110. I mean, it's not a 0-60 in 5 seconds, car, but it probably pulls about 7sec which is nice for a first car (to me) and it is a stick. His car just doesn't seem that fast. He's never punched it, cause he's a real safe/casual driver, but it just seems like it doesn't have the stuff to even spin the tires.... maybe if it were a stick :BOriginally posted by Reg Kmet

Oh, and about racin'. If I did, it would like to pick a curvy road, cause I'm positive the 4-wheel independent suspension and tight shocks would take to those curvys a lot easier than his car Either way, I still believe I could get him off the line The car is getting some body work done and then is going to get a paint job. My dad is lettin' a buddy of his do it, and he's gonna take his own sweet time, so it'll probably be done in about a month or so (kinda sucks not to have a car, but it's not like i have a license) but I'll definitly have pics when I get it back I can't wait.
Maybe even a contest on guessing what color I finally choosed. Who knows....I'm kinda poor and don't have much layin' around

those gm J bodys were not race car at all
some did make it to the race tracks as pace cars and for specialty races but they were just a replacement for the old x bodys

Limited Slip is just that. The 3rd member in your rear end has a set of clutch packs in there that allow it to slip. It has been mistaken as posi and yes you can spin both tires at the same time with it. Posi is when the axle is locked up tighter than a bulls ass. There is no slip if you turn sharp both tires will be traveling at the same speed and you will notice a grinding sound or chirping coming from the tires because they are fighting each other. One wants to move faster than the other and it causes problems. They even hop aroudn when turning sharp. Limited slip just allows the one tire that should be moving slower to do so. This is when the clutch pack in the rear end kicks in. It does also apply power to the other side if one side is spinning. But if ya get one side spinning and then the other side before ya know it you got both of them spinning and leavin' one hell of a burnout. My truck has a standard differential in the back. And i've got both tires on it to sping before. For about 10 FT. But when you have 4.10 gears and 350HP under the hood it will do it. And i hate to tell your friend but that Supra will tear that Grand Am a new assholio! I had a buddy who had one of those it was peppy but it wasn't a fast by any means.
I'm strictly a supra man myself
you have a '82 supra, which means you have the first year MK2 Supra (the MA60)
5M-GE (145 HP from 82-84)
It was basically a toyota celica with a 5m-ge, little longer, fender flares, and headlight differences, most of the other parts are shared with a celica of the same years (I have a mk3, when they changed the celica to a FWD and kept the supra a RWD, made on different assembly lines)
I believe your engine is 2800CC (2.8L) and i've seen people on the SOGI list (http://www.supras.com) such as Red Reimer who have done 7M-GTE transplants (a b1tch) into them, giving significantly more power (much much lighter vehicle)
if you have any questions about supras, lemme know, I would be the one here at PCA to talk to :?)

Sweet, somebody here knows as much (if not more) than I do about Supras
My friend and I (the one with the GrandAM) had a amateur drag, not real serious or anything. On the way back from the movie theater to my house we reached a two line street. Speed-limit was 40MPH, I believe. Anyway, we got a red light and I was behind him at the time so once i saw it turn red, I swiched lanes and rolled down the window. We both looked at eachother and kinda smiled I revved and got ready. When the light turned red I hit the gas and floored it. I pulled ahead of him then let off once I reached the speed limit....thats when he went by me fast cause he was still hittin' the gas.
"Legally" I beat him but he said he wasn't flooring it so...I know I can beat him with him trying so I want to do a serious race with him sometime. He now does agree that mine accelerates faster. Maybe I should take him on a curvy rode and show him it handles better too
