Neat. I kinda figured they would have used some sort of planetary gear. But after seeing the whole thing I know why they didn't. Man that is allot of stuff going on electronics wise.

Neither was I at first, but then I started realizing that those three electronics modules are huge
versions of the brushless motor controllers I'm used to seeing in electric RC cars or planes.
That's a brushless motor, so you need a ton of electronics to control the switching and some really huge transistors to handle the current. Three modules, one for each of the three coils.
On top of that I'm sure there's a ton of sensors so the Tesla's computer can adapt to changing driving conditions, and monitor power and efficiency.
