how to clean out a gas tank ?

this boat I have has a 5 gallon plastic fuel tank and it needs a good flushing. the cost of a new fuel tank is between $75 -$100 .
is there any ideas on how to flush this safely. only guessing but I'm thinking the problem is in the fuel gage -line connector area of the tank .already replaced the line and pump ball and both end connecters with brand new . the gas used in it is a 2cycle gas-oil mix .50/1
thinking of using 2 cans of carb and choke in the empty tank or mineral spirits or even brake clean .
my plan is to clean the tank and then add one in-line clear auto gas filter in the gas line after the tanks clean so no more problems.
not sure it the filter should be before the pump ball and the tank. or after between the pump ball and the motor.
