I got a friend I trade cars with sometimes. Both of us kinda get them but then don't do much with them.

So I got a $200 Mazda RX7, he wanted it and traded me 2 MGBs and a Spitfire for it, true they are in bad shape, but Mazda was not running either though rust free!

I got a MR2 which he wanted, engine apart and parts missing, I traded to get back my RX7 I wished I had not traded off. We're both happy!

I got a Porche for $500, rust free and drove it home, he wants it!
He has a 72 Mustang Coupe, only 700 ever made, complete though the fender and hood needs back on, vinyl top replaced, and engine rebuilt due to sitting out for years without the heads. May need heads? Has complete gasket kit, not sure if heads are at shop or if after a few years they may have trashed or sold them?

Anyway, put back together and toss in a few goodies, probably a $20,000 car. I seen similar go for more but mine might not be that nice.
WIFE says NO, she wants to keep the $500 Porsche!

So what do you think?
Should I keep the Porsche and old wife, or get a mustang and new wife?

Completely depends on what the year/model the Porsche is. Even if the engine is crap in that mustang, it's worth some $$$. Probably $2000 even if it's a fixer upper. $20,000 is a frame off fully restored pizza.

lot more info needed as in to what year and make of Porsche, and motor on the mustang . pictures would help to !

If it's a 914.....junk IMO but a 911, worthwhile if it's not a heap

Unless that Porsche is a very clean 914/944, I'd get the Mustang. A 911 on the other hand is worth keeping.

My Porsche I think is a 82 924 front engine. I think they only made the front engine a year or 2.

Ditch the Porsche. Those weren't known to be great cars and for $500, will probably cost far more to make half-way descent than it's worth.

That Porsche is not a very desirable car, but unless that 72 Mustang is a 351 HO or 351 CJ it is certainly not rare. Even the Mach 1 option for 1972 came to at least 5000 or 6000 units. Over 125,000 Mustangs produced in 1972 and the only really rare ones are the 351 HO and manual tranny convertibles.

Your call. IMHO not a particularly collectible Mustang.

The body alone on the mustang is worth more than that Porsche. I wouldn't bother with parts matching or anything on the mustang. Just getting it cleaned up = $$$. It would of course be a labor of love & the wife would definitely need an alternative mode of transport for the interim.

If the mustang's a rot bucket from a northern state with salted freeways in winter, IMO it's probably also not worth putting any money into. Both are probably just parts cars.

also if you don't have the money and time to re-do the car forget about it.
a lot of times on old cars its cheaper to buy them already done then to restore them yourself. and if you think it going to cost you 5 grand to make it right. double that figurer and your more then likely in the ball park. I have a good friend who owns 18 asst cars that have been re-done mostly early style grand prixs/GTO's like 64 -70 style last one he bought was 99.5 % complete .and he still drop a crap load into it to make it look how he felt was factory original. and this car was a bondo and lead free body. he didn't like the chrome body side molding so he had it removed and the holes filled in and paint fixed !
