85 wow! Wouldn't be good for cars like a hybrid Smart car or '74 Pinto.
Just for the record, there are roads in this state, especially N WI and especially at night where I won't drive near the posted limits because there are lots of sharp curves, hills, driveways with dense trees everywhere, and animals (esp deer at dusk).

The reason I like roundabouts is because of my exposure to them in England. It's a beautiful feeling to almost never have to stop. Sadly, as noted, in America people don't get it. Everyone treats them like stop signs & waits for it to clear out or an entire lane of people will load onto it without stopping & clog it up.

That was awesome.. I'm not usually in the fast lane unless I'm going around some other cars that are going slower than me. What I hate is when somebody comes up on your butt in the fast lane while you're going past another car and before there's enough room to safely get out of their way they've zipped between you and the other car because they're too impatient to wait another 10 seconds for you to move over.. Usually when this happens a few other cars behind them do the same thing.. Crazy...

I see that too, as if the race is on.
Back in the early '80s I once bought a $300 'winter beater', a '73 Duster with a 340 and it had almost no compression in one cylinder and burned lots of oil, like a qt every 50-100 miles so I'd just add drain oil 'cause I didn't care. Anyway, I noticed that when on the freeway, if someone was tailgating me when I had another car in front of me, all I needed to do was feather the gas and lots of smoke would billow out of its dual pipes and the guy would back off. So, on my '74 Regal with dual exhaust, I added my "smoke device" for just that purpose and it worked great. Used a fuel pump connected from an extra washer bottle with ATF and with a momentary on switch would inject ATF into the intake manifold, just a slight amount and so much smoke would come out that the guy behind me probably thought that the eng blew. No more tailgater. Didn't work on newer cars once cat. converters were standard as that lessened the effect too much and the oil would ruin the cats too eventually.

I agree with the statement that the roads have a design speed rating to a certain extent. Side roads, town roads, etc. Even SOME freeways.
In MA, I have seen some appalling things done by law enforcement that makes me think differently. I agree every roadways has a safe design speed (based on like other have said, below average driver, OLD car and poor suspension, tires, etc.). I used to drive the I90 in MA almost every day. One day, there was a new work zone erected. Both lanes still open in both directions, with a reduced speed of 45mph from 65mph. Reasonable for a work zone. Trouble is, in the 3 months it was up I never saw a worker. Not once. This is passing at 10am and returning usually around 3pm. What worker did I see? A Mass State police cruiser doing radar and stopping people for speeding. After about 3 months, the work zone was removed. Nothing apparent had been done but writing fat doubled workzone tickets. Things like this really make you wonder.
Myself, I drive about 5 over the limit on the freeway and routinely pass people in the left lane. If I'm in the left lane and someone flys up behind me, I will not increase my speed just to get out of the way. Sometimes I am only passing someone by 2-3mph, and it takes a minute or so to pass them. People get angry on the road about that but I am well within my rights to the road. I will not, however, sit in the left lane while not passing or going slower than traffic.

What gets me the most is...
I am driving along on 65 doing 65 in a 70 in the right lane. I do this so I can just zombie out and go. Now the trucks are doing between 62-70 so every once in a while i have to go left and pass a truck. I will speed up to do this so it doesn't hold up traffic too much. So im back to 65 in the right lane... and what have we here a cop with a radar gun... EVERYBODY slams on the breaks and slows down to like 60 even tho the speed limit is 70? WTH? THE limit is 70. you dont have to slow down that much. Then it backs traffic up.

Here, there's been so many cops that have been hit by cars while giving tickets that there's now a law "move over OR slow down". Although sure, might make sense if you're the cop but moving over "safely" isn't always possible or smart and to say "slow down", from what....90 and to what?Don't forget the rubber neckers that slow down for even a person getting a traffic ticket
I was recently discussing that to my wife while on the freeway because she thought I should have changed lanes even though the cop who pulled someone over was 2 lanes over from me. Then further up, there's another cop in the far left median (or break down lane) sitting sideways in a dark car, at night, LF door opened so he use his radar gun. One in-attentive text-er and he could easily be rear ended.

I find it amusing when an officer will make a you turn across 4 lanes of traffic to pull someone over doing 11 over the limit. Who is the larger safety concern at that point? It doesn't matter. Its nit about safety anymore, its about revenue and running the business.EvilHorace wrote:Here, there's been so many cops that have been hit by cars while giving tickets that there's now a law "move over OR slow down".
