That might explain a friggen problem I had a few years ago. Was driving 70 on I20 coming out of Georgia and all of a sudden the entire tread of the tire let go. Left a nice hefty dent in my rear driver side fender when it went out too. Tires hadn't even been on the truck for a whole year. The people we bought them from said they weren't inflated properly, but I had had the truck completely serviced prior to leaving on the trip and everything was A-OK. Go figure.. Now I feel like I need to go check the tires on my new car.. ;\

Just checked a tire I bought less than a year ago & it's a bit over 6 years old. Checked a friends & it's also 6 years old, but he got them a couple years ago.

Mine are almost new, so that's good. Mine were 2107 so that makes me feel good about that. But I'll have to check my fiance's car later and see what it's tires look like..

I've installed hundreds of tires yet never knew that the last 4 #s were a date code. I checked my "fleet" of 4 cars (presently) including 4 new tires I recently bought. All of mine are within months of when I purchased them, even 2 that I bought from a Sears in Sandusky Ohio on my way back from NY with my newest car that had one bad tire.
That story might explain why I always see so many customers vehicles with Michelin MXV4s that although have good tread life, the sidewalls are cracking from what's commonly called dry rot and that's also a condition of age. MXV4s have been sold for many years and maybe people are buying old ones? I'll be checking dates from now on. Btw, I've never bought 1 Michelin tire. Despite their reputation, I've always seen many problems with them.

If you're checking older tires, look closely at the sidewalls for small cracks which do get worse. I saw them on a tire in that video too. Now that I need glasses to read anything (over 50 crowd), I see those cracks more than ever when looking at tires. Some shrug that off, saying that the tread depth is still OK BUT just how many cracks (going how deep) can tires have before they blow out? To me, cracks are a sign of fatique, weakness and can't be good. If you see that on your tires, I'd consider replacing them soon because you won't see that on newer, healthy tires. I typically drive tires to maybe about 4/32" (not ever bald) and I never see those cracks in my tires even then.

so, our civic is an 04, the tires on it (we never changed them, and got the car used) are 04. 3 of them are 2404 and one is 2304

So not bad

why doesn't the DMV just mandate these checked at inspection, I am sure that would save some lives for sure. Be real, there will be some stores selling these old tires legal or not so until the laws are stiffened we need to spread the word!

In NJ the DMV does inspections but it is free.

See the video again. Presently there are no federal or state laws on tire age. My state doesn't have a vehicle safety inspection program at all so anyone who wants to drive anything that moves can do so legally.

no inspections in michigan . just crazy high plate renewal fees . if your autos plates cost lets say $150 a year when the cars new . when the cars 20 years old the cost per year to renew the plate will still be $150. the reason they claim is it helps to get those older cars off the streets .because the cost of putting plates on them. out weights whats the car is worth.
