One has to wonder, though, in this day in age, why they couldn't find an Asian actress to play the lead. Still feels like the 1960s when American Indians who were playing a leading role had to be white Anglos. Yeah, I understand that having a star of Scarlett Johanson's caliber is a plus in selling the film, but it's not like we don't have some world reknown female asian action hero stars nowadays...

I know that in much of Anime the characters look more Western but I agree that the cast should be Japanese or at the very least of Asian decent.
I think one of the problems with Hollywood is that it's afraid to take a chance on a movie that doesn't have a big name in the lead.

I'm a huge GITS fan. I can over look the casting if they do a good job on the story and special effects. And it looks like they have the look of it right. I hope they don't dumb down the plot too much.
One thing I have liked GITS is they show how tech would be abused if such things existed. That was the one thing they got totally wrong with Surrogates. Where were the back alley fights and illegal mods and what not. That movie had allot of potential world building and they wasted it with a dumb plot.

You know they are going to dumb it down. I haven't watched the series but if it's similar to many of the other Sci-fi anime I've watched (Steins; Gate, Lain, Noein, etc.), it has a fairly complex plot and requires thinking. I hope I'm wrong and we get something akin to Blade Runner.
I'd like to watch the GITS series, but I'm not sure where to start.

Just watch them in the order they were released. Some things don't tie in with others.
