The Martian

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Overall very positive reviews so far. Seems like they did justice to the book. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 93% for both critics and public reviews.

Going to try to see it next week.

Good review here:

Just saw it in 3D. WOW!!! A must see movie. Very well done. The things that Matt Damon had to do to survive in this desolate place. Lots of things go wrong along the way which required lots of thinking and planning. He decided that he will not die on Mars was inspiring to watch. Won't say much more so I don't ruin it, except it's a must see movie on the big screen.

BTW, make sure to pay attention to the funny dialog and clichés, and the disco music LOL.

Exec, if you haven't read the book, you should. It's exactly like that with more detail. Fricken' brilliant book.

Great movie that followed the spirit of the novel nicely. Needless to say not everything in the novel made it into the movie.

One glaringly stupid bit of bad science at the end that was put in there for pure Hollywood reasons (this is what was implied in the astronaut's review I posted above). You'll know it when you see it because it's the one incredibly bad piece of science in an otherwise scientifically accurate screenplay.

But very entertaining, very uplifting, beautiful visuals, and a celebration of the idea that science and engineering can overcome any technical challenge.

I have few BluRay discs because I can't rip them and put them on my server, and DVD quality is more than good enough for me most of the time. This will be one I will buy to add to my extremely small collection which includes Apollo 13.
