So is this suppose to be before Lord of the Rings?

This takes place ~60 or 70 years before LOTR. In the Movie, it's the book Bilbo was writing, "There and Back Again." It's about how Gandalf and Bilbo meet and their adventure with the Dwarves to retake the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the Dragon.

I like the Hobbit and recently finished reading most of it to my daughter. I decided to stop reading after Smaug is killed although there is more action toward the end. The in-between was just too slow. She kept falling asleep in two or three pages.

From the trailer, Jackson has taken several liberties and I'm happy to see that he's not going to stick strictly to the original. For one, Galadriel is not mentioned in The Hobbit. I'm looking forward to seeing her again. The only beef I have so far is that Thorin Oakenshield looks very tall for a dwarf.
