Can't believe no one's commented here about this yet. Great Movie!

Just saw it earlier this afternoon and I was impressed, they pulled it off well whereas when I first heard about it, I had my doubts.

If you haven't already, go see it.

Yeah I saw it last night with the wife. I was really impressed. My only comment is the cameo by Nimoy - not really understood why he was in that particular role. Anyway, this is a must see movie, especially if you are a Trekkie. Excellent character development, and excellent special effects.

Haven't seen the movie quite yet. Compare the cast from this movie to the original series, which would you feel is better?

I haven't seen it yet. Waiting to catch an early matinee.

If you're a nit-picking Trekkie like me, let me warn you that this is a "re-imagining" of Star Trek, just like BSG was a re-imagining of the old Battlestar Galactica, and like Smallville was a re-imagining of Superman.

As such, they will violate a lot of the known history of Star Trek, change the technology, and change the social dynamics. So although this is done in the spirit of Star Trek TOS, this is not not your father's Star Trek.

If you keep that in mind, then you can have fun watching it. By all reports it's very good.

Thanks FP. I haven't seen it yet but I was wondering how Kirk and Spock could be at Starfleet together when Spock was serving under Christopher Pike at the time on the Enterprise. Knowing that it's a re-imaging make sense.

When you see it, you'll see that IMO, they pulled that off correctly. Pike WAS there too. The movie seems historically accurate from my recollection. Like Ex mentions, the only strange part is Nimoy's role although it does tie things together for this movie.
Yeah, the ship's technically far better than the TV series was in '66 but after 43 years, you'ld expect that too.

Was it just me or did they actually pus the dates further into the future? i.e. the original ST was like 2012 or something remotely close and I think in this one it was something like 2220? or something? I don't recall, was too absorbed int he movie :)

No, they got the timeline right. 2012 would have predated them having warp drive and meeting the Vulcans :p

Evil: There are a lot of things "wrong" according to the original series timeline: The Enterprise is much bigger, it was built in a different location, Kirk commanded at least one other ship prior to the Enterprise, I could go on but they would be spoilers.

As long as you accept that it's a whole new Star Trek universe then it's okay.

I've heard nothing but good about it, but my family has been in such discord of late that I haven't had a chance to get out to see it.

saw it at the IMAX too, it was a great movie. I've watched practically everything Star Trek related in the past, wouldn't call myself a "trekkie" or anything, but I really enjoyed the new movie, hope there's more to come... :)
