I don't have a high $$ surround sound system for my TV but I run it through my home stereo (which isn't bad) and it's pretty impressive as is (just two speakers besides the TV itself).
I'd like to add an amplified subwoofer and I'm looking at one in a catelog that might be OK but I'm not sure if it's powerfull enough. It's got a 12" sub and a 100W amp (only $130) but is that enough power or should I opt for a more powerfull amp (like about 400w)?
I want serious floor shaking power, not a little rumbling. My stereo speakers have 15" bass speakers but they're very old speakers (I bought them new in '74) and they only really come to life with alot of volume.
Anyone here just use an amplified sub only vs a whole new surround sound system (which can get costly depending....)?

It's hard to justify a subs quality just by the power amps rms output.
I have a David d box sub form costco its about 300 watts self powered and it thumps pretty good for movies etc..
it's a bit sloppy for music so I have to turn it way down...
check out costco if you can...
Paradigm and most good speaker makers have powered subs for home theater ...
It's one of those things you kind of have to hear first imo

Shopping around always helps and let your ears do the buying!

I picked up a 10" KLH powered sub for 129.99! The thing wails! Great for music and movies.
