Anyone here have a newer car deck with salelite radio?

Post by EvilHorace »

OK, I'll admit that I havent bought a new aftermarket car cd player/radio in a few years but until a few days ago I hadn't even heard of satelite radios for cars before. I've been told that "they rock, 900 stations" and that the service for it costs about $10 a month (like I need more expenses ;) ) BUT are these things worthwhile or not? Our local radio stations SUCK so I usually always just play cds unless I've heard those onboard too many times (occasionally forgetting to restock the onboard supply or just being lazy).

Sound & Vision recently had a good article on XM radio. There are about 110 stations, all with very specific content. They said the sound was near-CD quality, too. I am guessing it is about 128 kbps mp3 quality.

Some stations are commercial free. Other stations have commercials, but they guarantee no more than 6 minutes per hour. The best part is that they don't have those stupid ads touting that the station your listening to is the best in town.

The guy writing the article seemed to be impressed with XM. I plan getting satellite radio myself, whenever I get a new car.

There is another service called Sirius. I don't know if it has actually started up, though. Sirius was supposed to beat XM to market, but they had some delays.

Heard Sirius won't be up till this fall, XM has a good website with sample listening to different channels.

the XM radio was given the prize for the neetest new idea. If I did the monthy bill thing I would think about it. but I hate monthly bills.

I like it even though it's not exactly cheap. Better yet that it adds onto my existing radio as I thought I'd need to replace it. Before I decide to take the plunge on XM when I have a few spare bucks, does anyone here know if Sirius might be even better or less expensive?

see, i had that satellite radio idea since like 1997.

it's not really from a satellite, but from cell-phone towers where you will get your signal. ( it just sounds cooler to say "satellite radio" i guess) but if you have a large enough network built, there may be some satellites involved.

it is done from WAP servers, using XML, hence the name XM Radio.

it just goes to show that the early bird gets the worm, with regards to resources.

but what makes me wary of XM is that they ca me out way too commercial from the start. they got some big money from somewhere.

back in 1997, i was planning to come out with my own service in fall 2002, i heard about XM Radio a couple years ago, but i never thought they would release this soon .

and my service was gonna be free. i am building a small infrastructure (compared to XM) and i am rethinking about releasing until about Christmas 2002.

i also had a crude device built that could port audio signal from the internet to a car stereo. but it was quite slow.

by the end of the year, the devices used to capture these signals in car audio will be a bit more developed and there will be browsers in car stereos, where the user can select what station to use(or goto pretty much any wireless site, just like internet-ready cellphones now). And when you go buy a car, the service will be included into your monthly payment as an option.

XM is a service, and there will be many other large services coming out this summer, but what is gonna happen is that the cellphone services out there will buy most of these guys up.

That is where the cellphone services and the automotive industry will meet. I mean, really meet. If you already got a cellphone, and you buy one of these new cars, then your account will transfer to your new device, in your new car. (not just Cadillac and BMW and MAzda, but all of them) you still get to keep your phone and it still works fine. But you will also have a hands-free phone inside your car audio system. as well as an internet browser (probably rather crude for now) that you can select ANY internet station on the internet, not just those that something like XM Radio will provide for you.

So, since all this tech is coming out, I pretty much quit trying to develop it. i am just gonna come out with a bigass internet radio station. I am assuming that the people with these devices are pretty much internet savvy, so i will do most of my marketing on the internet. And then when they get in their car, they can log on to my station.

And I put out the music for free, but if there is any money to be made, i will make it on the "traditional" internet.

but with all this money being thrown out there, i probably will get to nothing more than "college radio" status. however, i have found the best music on college radio.

Very cool, thanks for the info. I listen to Musicmatch through my PCs here and at work so if what you're saying is true, then I should then be able to get that or something very similar in the near future in my car as well. I'll wait a while to see what arrives before making my move as an internet hook-up would be better than radio XM IMHO.
