Pearl Harbor

hi all,
I finally saw this on dvd. Not bad as far as the critics ragging on it when it first came out.

What the deal with the movie being separated on 2 dvd's. It kinda breaks the continuity of the picture when intermission flashes on to tell you to insert the other disk.

btw, I thought the other disk was special features and stuff and not the other half of the movie.

thoughts.

They put it on two disk? Thats stupid. I saw it in theaters and thought it was alright. Only real good thing about it was the effects... ...other than that its all been done before. Ever seen "Tora Tora Tora?" Got that one on DVD...

No. Missed that one. I see it for a good price sometimes. Is it good???

I like Midway which I thought was good.

It's ok. It's an older flick, so the effects aren't great. I really like havin' good effects in action movies, the older ones just don't do it for me cause they are just "off". Know what I'm talkin' about?

So, it was definitly good for its time, but is only "ok" to me. I'd sell it if it weren't for my dad liking it and wanting to see it.

I didn't think that the split in itself was a bad thing really, after all I often pause DVDs to get another beer or something anyway and it's paused in a place where it doesn't break up any action whatsoever.
I thought it was a good movie despite the similarity of the romance part very much like The Titanic too (which I also liked).
I guess that when creating movies like that, if there was no romance or side story of any type, it'd just be another documentary. The romance idea is probably done in order to appeal to women so that it's just not done up as a "guy movie" (all action, violence and things that most women don't seem to like in movies)

I liked Pearl Harbor a lot and of course mostly due to the great special effects. The sappy love story had some amusing moments but the action scene were to me awesome. Of course far better than tora tora tora. Having it on 2 DVD's did kinda suk but like evil says it just gives you a break.

I liked it as well. The love thing doesn't bother me that much aside from the fact that they really focused on it too much. They obviously tried to pull off Cameron's success with Titanic (which had a love story to bring you into the flick as well) but they overdid it. Still it is a good movie with amazing special effects to boot.

My only gripe was that my wife and I were really into it and suddenly it says to switch disks.

That kind of broke the continuity of it. Its almost like watching Harry Potter in the threatre and halfway through the projector malfunctioned. LOL

Its still a good movie, though.

The Godfather Part 2 does the same thing. It pisses me off.

Breaveheart fits on a single disc, why cannot Pearl Harbor?

Lets, see... If they make the disc dual layer, let's assume they have 8.5 GB to work with. That is 73014444032 bits. The movie is 183 minutes, that is 10980 seconds. So, you have 6649767 bits/second on a single disc. That works out to 6.34 Mbits/second. DVD uses VBR MPEG-2 encoding, and the formats MAX rate is 11 Mbits/second.

Sounds like they could have put the whole thing on a single disc, IF they have Dolby Digital ONLY. It looks like they have DD and DTS on the discs, though. That is probably what killed it. DD+DTS will take up 1/4 of the disc on their own. If the producers had decided to stick with DTS or DD only, it probably would have fit on a single disc. I guess it goes to show that the DVD standard is already antiquated.

Oh, well... As you can see, I am bored :) I don't feel like studying for my CECS 590 final anymore.

I liked the movie as well, great special effects with a good story and lots of action. I bought the DVD as well but I have yet to watch it...

I thought it was a pretty shallow and boring movie..the acting was bad, and the plot was so-so. Action was the only highlight, but having to sit through an hour of Bruckheimer's god awful directing kind of ruins the action when you finally get to it. It's like eating lots of spicy mexican food, but waiting an hour before you can drink anything. When you finally drink some water, it feels great, but you wonder why the hell it took you an hour to get your reward. Tora Tora Tora is a much better movie overall, of course not quite as flashy, but the actual content and depth is loads better (presented as a historical drama, rather than shallow love triangle made for teenage girls with some action thrown in for the guys).

I liked Pearl Harbor quite a bit and so did the wife, but I thought it was too drawn out in parts.
The action was very good and some of the best war scenes I thought.
Kind of surreal but it might have been like that ....you know sitting on a beach in Hawaii on a sunny day and boom !
Then again it seemed silly how America wasn't ready at all for the attacks even after the Japanese planes were inland and attacking.
I also thought the attack scenes on Pearl Harbor were extensive but when the USA went over there they only filmed it for about 10 minutes...not sure what was the point of that air raid....
over all a good movie I wont buy it though but I will rent it again next year maybe...

Son got it for me for Christmas!

Great special effects, and fairly epic in scope. Tora x 3 and Midway are great as well in the classic sense.
The swap disk in the middle is kinda odd!

I read somewhere that this spring they were going to possibly come out with another version that axes the love story. Anybody else know if this is true?
