Whelp, I took Wraithboy to see FF today and I gotta tell ya, it was awesome! The animation just blows you away throughout the entire feature. At only 92 mins approx. it certainly packed as much movie in as it could. The story is somewhat weak, but who is going to this movie for the plot only?

I took a "long lunch break" today and saw the movie. It completely blew me away! At some points I was so engrossed in the beautiful animations and details that I forgot to pay attention to the story. LOL.

Yeah Sol, I agree. I found myself doing the same thing. Yet on the other hand, Wraithwife isn't as impressed by animation as I am and she didn't like the film at all due to the somewhat cheesy, FinalFantasy-esque story. For someone who has played the games, the story is par for the course, but to those not familiar with the series, it will be lacking. You have been warned people :lol

I saw the movie tonight and enjoyed it. I think the overall experience was a good one. I think the movie has raised the bar for the expected level of detail in future animated movies. It was impressive. It wasn't perfect either, but it should be enjoyed for what it is.

I want to see this movie as well. Heard it has great animation. I think most folks are going to go see for the computer animation rather than the story itself.

What kind of hardware did they use to create this movie? Heard linux/unix had something to do with it.

Plucky

Not sure as to what code they used Plucky, but you can bet your cold Winnipeg ass that they used some beefy hardware for it :D

The movie was modeled and composited on SGI systems but the rendering was done on huge Linux clusters.

Nothing beats Linux clustering (well, maybe BSD clustering :) ) for raw price/performance advantage.A supercomputer can be built for $100,000 anymore. That is super cheap. The IBM supercomputer where I work cost over $3,000,000.

OTOH, I went and saw FF yesterday. It was a good movie. I have read too many reviews of people saying it was a cheesy story, and that the plot sucked. The plot was a FF plot, through and through. It had its moments, and was a bit cheesy. Overall, it was pretty much what I expected. SUPER eye-candy, and a story that only Square could come up with.

me and my friends went to watch it 2 days ago.

we all liked it and thought the story was good. even my friends which hated final fantasy games and rpg's in general liked it a lot. also the animation was killer. looked damn real in some parts and mad fake in others.

when i first saw the previews i thought i wouldn't like the movie...it looked very different then from what i was used to playing. now it's in space with aliens and such. but then again every final fantasy game had a different story and characters, just not this hi tech and non magical.

but i'm glad i went to watch it, good movie

I saw it a few days ago and thought it was horrible. The dialog was poorly written (cheesy) and although the effects were good (for the most part) some of it was just stupid and really ruined the film, for me. There were only 6 people in the theater when my friend and I watched it (thats including us) and we were laughing at how stupid the ending was.

The last line was "its so warm" What the hell kinda way to end a movie is that? That last line's a killer :lol Some of the effects were cool though, I will admit. I guess not being a big Final Fantasy buff has to do with it...but I still didnt' enjoy it too much. And it seemed a few others in that theater had the same thoughts I did :)

I have to agree. I just saw it today with my dad and uncle. Reminded me a lot of FF7. Gaia, spirit of planet, and all that new age crap. Don't get me wrong, I love a good deep sci-fi story, but this was pretty melodramatic. The first half of the movie was pretty good. Excellent effects, really cool ships and technology and the characters are only a few steps away from looking real. When they started explaining the story is when we started making jokes. And the ending totally lost me. My uncle said it best: "so the big blue jellyfish met the big red jellyfish and what???"

Yeah I agree with the last two posts...plot was weak and strange...
The animation was superb, and I'm glad Square didn't make it Anime-style ( I Hate Anime).
Worth seeing once, but not twice.

Well I FINALLY saw it at the matinee today and I'm glad I did, I thought it was pretty darn good overall, the animation was amazing, the action was great, and the story was even pretty good (a lot of the "how in the heck are they going to get out of this one type of senarios)... what could have been better was the last 10-15 minutes, the part of the movie that's almost the most important was a confusing mess, it doesn't really explain wtf happened and almost everybody dies, they didn't have to go and kill off Grey, I didn't like that, but overall I did enjoy the movie, I may even get the DVD...
