How 30 Lines of Code Blew Up a 27-Ton Generator

Post by FlyingPenguin »

A secret experiment in 2007 proved that hackers could devastate power grid equipment beyond repair—with a file no bigger than a gif.

Actual footage of the test:

"Turns out I’m 'woke.' All along, I thought I was just compassionate, kind, and good at history. "

I scare my self some times. I knew what had happened with out reading the article just by watching that video once.

However I figured they would attack the ECU of the diesel and not the main synchronization breaker. Why would that thing need to be IOT... It should be a stand alone unit with a main contractor that is IOT. Then then all that can happen is they can connect and disconnect the generator but the synchronization breaker would be able to still do its job. Bean Counters... Have one unit do the job of two at the cost of security.

What I don't understand is why is the main disconnect able to even be reprogrammed in the field by internet? Ever since every thing has to be connected it has been vulnerable. This style of attack would not have worked or been possible 20 years ago.

Yeah but now everyone wants to put everything on the Internet so they can monitor it and believe it's secure. LMFAO
