OSIRIS-REx Sample Collection at Asteroid Bennu: SamCam View of TAGSAM

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Just as predicted, an asteroid is mostly covered with a loose collection of debris that's barely held down by it's weak gravity.

Very cool.
Captured on Oct. 20, during the OSIRIS-REx mission’s Touch-And-Go (TAG) sample collection event, this series of 82 images shows the SamCam imager’s field of view as the NASA spacecraft approaches and touches down on asteroid Bennu’s surface. The sampling event brought the spacecraft all the way down to sample site Nightingale, and the team on Earth received confirmation of successful touchdown at 6:08 pm EDT. Preliminary data show the sampling head touched Bennu’s surface for approximately 6 seconds, after which the spacecraft performed a back-away burn.

That's so cool we pulled that off. I hope our next mission will be to design and deploy a probe that can bore into it and see what metals are in it. I believe that one day we will be farming asteroids for precious metals.

So did it actually collect something? That looks like it barely had a chance.

No confirmation yet. That's exactly what WAS supposed to happen, but they haven't reported whether there's any confirmation that they captured anything in the sampler.

Okay, I did a quick late night Google and I found this:

NASA confident OSIRIS-REx collected asteroid samples

I was just wondering if they used some sort of vacuum to guarantee something gets collected, in case the arm could scoop from the impact.
Just spit-balling ideas on how I'd do it.
