GSuite ending - now what?

Post by fogus »

Howdy, folks. It's been a long time.

I went looking for a non-Google-run forum to ask about this, but search results didn't give back anything promising. I suppose that's my first question: does anyone know of a good non-Google-run forum for discussing Google products?

The reason I'm posting is that I just got the email from Google about their GSuite product line changing into Google Workspaces. Sure, that's probably a better name, but, for me, this change is pretty terrible: they are removing the unlimited storage option for all but the Enterprise ("contact us for pricing"). I have a lot of Google Drive storage in my GSuite account--more than any of the non-Enterprise options would allow. I backup a *lot* of data to Google Drive.

I called and talked to Google support about the change. The support guy wasn't that helpful, but did make it sound like I wouldn't be forced to transition for a long time (his language wasn't super crisp--probably because he couldn't be). He did mention the price would be $30/month/user for Enterprise--if that's the case, it wouldn't be the end of the world for me.

Curious if anyone else is thinking about this situation or has thoughts on what a better approach would be. I certainly take advantage of lots of Google Drive features and don't want them to go away. On the other hand, I don't like having this monthly contract that seems like it could change price at any point. Sure, $30/month doesn't price me out of the market, but what if they say $60 or $100. There will always be some breaking point. But running a big NAS is costly too, and it wouldn't give me all my files on the go or all of the other great Drive features.
