Interesting...the only filter that I've changed is the one inside the house. I never thought to look at the furnace to see if one is on the unit.

Psypher- that was a photo I found online - the unit in my attic a lot more cramped in there if you could picture that as possible. my place is a split ranch home .my neighbor has half the building and the wife and I the other 1/2. my unit kind of L shape design and runs behind the attached 2 1/2 car garage.

It just depends where the installer put it. Usually the filter (here in Florida anyway) is right at the intake of the air handler. However, I have seen some installations where the filter is in the intake vent inside the house.

my filter in my hallway ceiling in the air intake. right in the center of the house.

If anything, it would act like a P trap and keep bugs out. Might get a frog trying to live in it LOL.
