Boarding a US NAVY NUCLEAR SUBMARINE in the Arctic - Smarter Every Day 240

Post by FlyingPenguin »

This is amazing access because you just normally don't get to see inside real nuclear subs. Granted this is an older Los Angeles attack sub, but still, the Navy tends not to allow cameras inside.

He's going to be doing a series of episodes on his stay on the sub, but the first two are up which consist of him getting to the arctic camp where this sub was parked for a science expedition, and then the first video is of him going aboard and the sub diving while he interviews some of the key personnel.

What freaked me out was how tiny that lookout area on top of the sail is. In movies they portray it as big enough to hold 3 or 4 men. It looks like you can barely fit two people in it in real life, and one of them will have to stand on the hatch, or straddle it if it's open.

Yeah, right?! I've been on that sub in Pearl Harbor. I knew that subs can be tight but holy crap! You're not kidding, that conning tower is like the size of a bathroom stall. LOL

I've been on that sub in Pearl Harbor.
been on that one also the USS Silversides submarine in Muskegon, michigan. there were really cramp . was also on USS Missouri battleship, nicknamed the 'Mighty Mo.battleship in pearl harbor . even some areas of this battleship were very tight cramp . even the living, eating and working quarters on the battleship were very confining . not as tight as in a sub but didn't seem much larger.

That was incredibly cool. I knew how a torpedo tube worked in principle, but not the mechanical details. That's one hell of a complex mechanism.

That was informative and very cool. I don't think I'd want to shimmy my way down into a torpedo tube though. lol
