My first drone crash

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Took it up last weekend to get some aerial photos of the completed backyard now that the pool solar heater is installed (and it's a VERY neat and clean installation on the retaining wall).

However, I was flying the drone from the camera view the whole time - something I have had to force myself to learn as I'm used to flying model planes by eyeballing them directly.

Sadly, I didn't see the tree :)

No major damage, just a cracked suspension mount which I'm told, breaks all the time since it's plastic. Ordered one from Amazon for $12 and there's lot's of YouTube videos showing how to replace it.

DJI Phantom 3 Standard. I bought it 2 years ago, to document the construction of the house.

It has served me well.

What is that long section with the steps that you are standing on? Retaining wall?

Retaining wall?
Yup. The backyard cuts into the hill and the retaining wall consists of two 6 foot high walls, with the upper wall set back 9 feet from the lower wall to create a shelf. The solar pool heaters (black panels) occupy half that shelf. We'll eventually get around to putting some large potted plants on the rest of it.

The retaining wall was not originally planned - we had originally hoped to put the house at the top of the hill, but the geology wouldn't cooperate.

As it turns out, we're glad they cut us into the hill because someone built a house right behind us and that retaining wall gives us privacy. The wall also seems to act as a venturi and cause a breeze to pass through the backyard almost all the time, which is nice.

You can get a better idea from this photo:

So you weren't using googles just looking at a screen... was gonna say how discombobulating that must have been.

Yeah, I have a hood I made for the tablet, out of black construction paper, to shade it from the sun. It's a Nexus 7 which is pretty bright already, and the hood helps.
