Court Allows Police Full Access to Online Genealogy Database

Post by darcy »

"Genetic testing has become sufficiently cheap and fast that companies like 23andMe and Ancestry have sprung up to offer consumer genetic testing services. That means millions of people have copies of their genetic profiles sitting on a server someplace for the first time, and police have taken notice. A Florida court has set a potentially troubling precedent by allowing police to access one of these online databases in full, even if users opted out of law enforcement searches."

I'm sure we'll see the insurance companies pick this up under the guise of a "Wellness program."

We were already fooled by the wellness program where I work. We didn't have to give DNA samples, but we had to log our doctor's visits and other activity in order to get a discount of the insurance. After 3 or so years of this, the discount was dropped. Now all we get for logging our activity is a drawing to win some BS. I stopped participating after the discount was ended. I realized that the discount was really the insurance company's way of buying my data.
