Amazingly it looks like the nave (central part of the church) survived in surprisingly good condition. Early reports say the organ survived and a lot of the artwork in the side chambers.
Keep in mind the roof of the nave is stone and then above that was a wood timber roof frame. The roof frame burned, but the stone roof over the nave protected most of the church until the central spire collapsed. Even so, only certain sections of the nave roof collapsed, and the fire didn't seem to burn in the nave. The pews are even intact.
Sure, there's fire damage and water damage, but it could have been so much worse.
Because of the barrier between the burning roof timbers and the stone nave roof, there was time for some pretty damn brave people to move a lot of the artwork out of the nave.
This is a UNESCO world heritage site, and they announced today that any talk of a "modernized look" reconstruction is off limits. The cathedral will be rebuilt to it's original look. Fortunately this is one of the most well documented historical sites in the world.
