Deer meat in the freezer

Post by wvjohn »

Went out deer hunting last week with a friend, I didn't see much but he got a nice 9 pt buck. His freezer was pretty full (and it was my land) so I got most of the meat. Getting my rifle sighted in the day before was kind of hilarious, because I hadn't fired it in years (old remington 30.06). It was neat getting out in the woods before dawn in the 20 degree weather and just doing it.

havent been hunting in years, but make it a point to sight my rifles in a couple times a year still. Plus at least 2 range days a month since a carry at all times.
When I lived in montana, we hunted for survival, not sport, I love me some deer, elk, moose, bear and the occasional exotic

Jerky is the best part- the great thing is we always had jerkey from the prvious years hunt, and often used it as a main food source while hunting!

Too many people in my area. I see more people than deer in the woods.

Wow, what's more exotic than moose and bear? I'm all for hunting for survival and now that I hit, ran over a deer last summer, OK......shoot 'em all! ;) Way too many deer in this state for sure.

I've never hunted for deer, mainly because my real dad didn't and passed away when I was 12 and my step father (who did hunt) never offered to take me when I was a bit older. Now, no one here would eat it anyway (besides me) so no point.

I have a bunch of friends who are hunters -not me do . I have had a good deer steak in my travels .and I have had some bad deer stew that I wouldn't had given to my dogs . some of the best eats I have had has to be elk. but then again it was from a friend who personally was friends with Ted Nuggent .
can't say I have ever met Ted myself .but I have had some of the wild game he has taken .
the Last time I was Talking to myself . I got into such a heated argument . that is why I swore I never talk to that guy again. you know what it worked now no buddy talking to me. :help

Well, Since my family is large we are fortunate that we come up in the MT. wildlife lottery and we get to get a tag for something more wild, Montana has one of the largest numbers of wildlife
Antelope would be one Image
These get large, and some look to be like African gazelles but not related
ImageBig Horn sheep are another, but there is now only 4-6 tags a year as The citizen are trying to build larger numbers back up.
BisonImageThese are like buffalo but some are as large as an suv. Unfortunatley like buffalo many years ago they were slaughtered. Numbers are getting to sustainable in the last decade
ImageMountain Lion - The population is over run. Sorry if this makes anyone sad, but in montana, if we see lions in our viciity, we kill them. Their fur coat pelts make warm winter jacket insulation as well

While wolfs used to only hunt for survival a failed government program of pack introductory into Idaho and western Montana has gotten out of control. The population has soared as they have no animals who prey on them. The go threw slaughtering everything in their path from livestock, pets, large game. The hunt in large packs and often take little of what they kill because their is no environmental pressure on them- they are the top of the food chain, well them and the grizzles, but grizzlies are almost cuddly compared to this modern group of wolves. Sorry once again, my family and most the people I know will immediately take down wolves that come into town or on property, or cross our path in the mountains.
I love the wild country, and when was younger would back pack extensively all over western Montana.
Because of the bears especially grizzles, wolf, mountain lions, and other threats Its smart to carry at minimum a handgun, bear spray, first aid, knife, gps, waterproof matches.
Added bonus is a rifle, lightweight shelter, thermo bag, and a portable cb radio(best if you find a guy to boost it up)

I love Montana and the wild, Bald eagles are an everyday thing. Raptors of all kind. Elk Moose Antelope, wild pigs turkeys, sometimes walking down the street in town!

Forgot to add, we wont let a wolf go to waste, we have one of the largest native american populations in the US. We will use the meat, or they will buy it. They also buy the pelts, and much more to create clothing and other essentials.
Alot of us end up buying back a good deal of these goods as they are good for the weather, and well made. And they make things for the tourist like arrows with the wolfs teeth and claws. All sorts of cool trinkets

After graduating HS in '75 (yeah, I'm old), my best friend and I went backpacking 1 day in glacier national park. We weren't prepared for climbing a steep grade with 60 lb backpacks and winter gear (it was early July) and it was thunder snowing as we hiked up. By the time we reached our camp site, my coat was off and I had hypothermia. I just wanted to lay down in the snow and go to sleep and if it wasn't for my friend, I wouldn't be here.
By morning all of our stuff was soaking wet so we hiked back down and stayed at some nasty, cheap hotel ($4 per night) until our stuff dryed out in the basement. From there, we went to Yellowstone, ate our freeze dried backpacking food and got food poisoning. Fun! ;)
Oh, the bast part was that we couldn't get a car to drive there so all of our travel was by Greyhound Bus. Those things stop at every small town and in the worst areas so you can't sleep, took 35 hours to get there too. I'll never go on one of those things again.

The coyote, wolf populations are increasing here too. Big cats are rare.

So Billygoat, how long have you been in Philly? My son was there recently for 2 weeks of training. I told him I wanted a good cheese steak brought back and he got me 4 from different places but I'm sure that they're much better when you're there and get them hot vs heating up from being frozen.
