Hurricane Sandy looks like a doozy headed this way

Post by wvjohn »

The models are coming up with crazy low pressure at it nears the coast - we're 125 miles inland and in the cone for 60+ winds, 8" of rain *and* the possibility of some real snow depending on how the cold front wraps on the western side. We've been pretty lucky here on power, but I went out this morning and bought a generator - 5500w Briggs and Stratton - last one in the area. Guy at home depot said they were sold out but they found one more in the back while i was there. I checked online before and that was the only place with a chance of finding one. This summer I was in southern WV in an area that lost power for 5-14 days from the Derecho it wasn't pretty.

glad you got a generator -make sure if you hadn't already to fire it up and test it out.also if you hook it up to your house that you pull the main. don't want you to blow everything up if power comes back on and you have the unit going. it should be enough to run your whole house except a air unit.
did you see the sign at Home Depot -- no returns on generator's just repairs if needed :)

that really sounds like it will be a very nasty storm if all 3 weather systems collide as predicted. all of you on the east coast take care ! they say we should be just far enough west so not to really be affected. but just enough here in michigan .

unpacked the generator and it's got minor frame damage from being dropped..but it seems to run fine..called home depot - they'd swap it but they have nothing in stock for the forseeable future...said I could being it in for repairs later. Oh well.

Everything is put away in sheds, heavy stuff outside is all roped together to posts. Main threat up here is rain and power failure from other failures closer to the coast which tend to cascade. There is a decent chance of snow on the backend depending on what happens.

Good Luck to everyone further north and along the coast, esp. NYC! Storm surge could be very nasty up there. Everybody stay safe.

I need to put some more stuff in my garage and finish batting down the hatches. Groceries are done and liquor cabinet is restocked. I have enough charcoal and meat in deep freeze to BBQ for a week. I'll check in via smart phone periodically.

Southeast Michigan Weather
States of emergency have been declared in MA, MD, VA, NY, NJ, CT, PA, NC, DC in anticipation of Sandy. S/E Michigan will most likely go under high winds watches as we head into tomorrow. Some snowfall can be expected with this system also. Winds in S/E Michigan are going to be around 45-60mph+ especially near the Lake Huron shores where winds could gust over 70mph! STAY TUNED! This is going to be a prolonged wind event, with possible loss of power and downed trees. At this time this is just a precaution, stay tuned everyone!.
